Scots Fall in NCAC Opener

Minassie The College of Wooster men's tennis team was on the wrong end of four third-set super tiebreakers in an 8-1 loss to 24th-ranked Kenyon College on Wednesday.

Wooster's No. 1 doubles team of Alon Liberman and Austin Hanna got the Scots off to a good start with a convincing 8-2 win. However, little did they know it would be the only win they would capture on the night.

Alex Drewes and Nebyou Minassie fell 8-6 in the No. 2 doubles flight, and Shivam Dewan and Patrick Johnson fell 8-2 in the No. 3 flight.

The No. 3 and No. 4 singles flights were the two matches to end in straight sets. Drewes fell 6-1, 7-5 at No. 3 and Dewan lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. Drewes's opponent, Rishil Kondapaneni, entered ranked 20th in the region.

The string of bad luck came from the four other singles flights.

The No. 1 flight saw a matchup between regionally ranked opponents as No. 14 Luis Andres Platas got the better of the 15th-ranked Liberman after a long battle in the super tiebreaker 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (12).

Hanna fell in the No. 2 flight 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (7). Minassie also fell in the No. 5 flight after a similar second set comeback, 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (3).

Finally, Johnson fell in a narrow No. 6 flight match 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8).

Wooster drops to 8-6, while Kenyon moves to 5-6. This was the first match for both teams in the North Coast Athletic Conference East Division.

Wooster will host Allegheny College on Saturday in another East Division matchup.
