Men’s Tennis Tops Future NCAC Foe John Carroll
VanOyen, Dickerson and Stratford leave unbeaten
CHAGRIN FALLS - In a preview of what will be a conference match in one year's time, the College of Wooster men's tennis team defeated John Carroll University 5-2 at The Wembley Club on Sunday.
Wooster (3-1) held the advantage after doubles play, winning the point after taking two of the matches. Sophomores Bennett Dickerson and Max Stratford were dominant in the No. 3 flight, winning by a 6-1 score. First-year Ian Royse and sophomore Anthony VanOyen had a little bit of a tougher time but prevailed en route to a 6-3 win at the No. 2 flight.
Strong singles play helped seal the win for the Scots, taking four of the six matches. VanOyen, Dickerson and Stratford all made it a clean sweep for their matches on the afternoon.
VanOyen won the top flight 6-3, 6-2. Dickerson battled through a first set bagel to a 0-6, 6-1, 7-6 (6) victory at No. 5 singles, while Stratford held down No. 6 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 score.
Sophomore Arnav Yadav capped off the scoring with a win in the second flight by a 6-4, 6-3 score.
John Carroll (0-2) secured victories at No. 1 doubles, No. 3 singles and No. 4 singles, although the doubles win did not count toward the team's point total.
Yadav and junior Namit Misra battled in the first doubles flight, dropping that match by a 6-3 decision. Royse had a tough match in No. 3 singles and fell 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (5) while Misra lost in No. 4 singles by a 6-2, 6-0 score.
Wooster will have a little bit of a break before returning to the courts on its annual spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. The trip will begin with a match against Illinois Tech on March 17.
