The College of Wooster men's tennis team has started 0-3 to open its six-match spring break trip.
Playing five matches in five days, the Scots have some hard luck losses to their name already. After a 6-1 loss to Illinois Institute of Technology on Monday, the Scots suffered back-to-back 4-3 losses to Macalester College and Millikin University.
Against Illinois Tech, Wooster's lone point came via Anthony VanOyen in the No. 1 singles flight where he won 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5). The Scots lost the doubles point, but VanOyen and Ian Royse got a win in the No. 2 flight at 7-5.
In the match versus Macalester, Wooster trailed after doubles play despite the No. 1 doubles win from Namit Misra and Arnav Yadav, who won 7-5.
VanOyen picked up another win at the No. 1 flight, 6-2, 6-1. Yadav finished the match sweep with a win at No. 2, 6-3, 7-5, and Walker Wood gave Wooster a point at No. 6 with a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (5) win.
The other singles matches each came down to a 10-point tiebreaker, but Wooster was on the wrong end of each.
At No. 3, Royse fell 1-6, 6-0, 1-0 (8), and at No. 4, Misra lost 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (2). The kicker was the No. 5 match where Bennett Dickerson forced the tiebreaker only to lose a marathon of a match, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (11).
Against Millikin on Wednesday, Wooster started off by taking the doubles point behind wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 flights. Yadav and Misra won 7-5, while Dickerson and Wood won 6-1.
VanOyen gave Wooster another point in singles competition, winning the No. 1 flight 7-6 (2), 6-0, while Wood finished his match sweep at the No. 6 flight, 6-4, 6-1.
The two through four flights lost in straight sets before Dickerson again faced a marathon of a match but once again fell on the wrong side in the No. 5 flight, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (8).
Wooster plays twice more this week with a match versus Ripon College on Thursday.
