John Carroll Bats Hot As Wooster Falls Twice, 10-1 and 10-0

Home-standing John Carroll University took advantage of the warmer weather against The College of Wooster, as the Blue Streaks utilized a big day at the plate, along with solid performances in the circle, to sweep both ends of a softball doubleheader in University Heights, Ohio, with the Fighting Scots, 10-1 and 10-0.

In the first game, the Scots (4-28) jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Junior Andrea Kelley blasted her first career home run, giving the Scots a quick 1-0 advantage.

John Carroll (19-7) wasted no time answering back, smacking four hits and scoring four runs in the first frame. The visitors tacked on a single run in the second, three more in the third and an additional two runs in the sixth inning, ending the game with 13 hits en route to the victory.

Wooster managed six hits in the game, as junior Rachel Gaines posted a 2-for-3 opener on singles to right field in the first and third frames.

Katie Pifer suffered the loss on the mound, throwing five complete innings and allowing 10 runs, six of which were earned, as the Scot defense committed two errors. The fourth-year Scot struck out four and walked two. Picking up the win for John Carroll was Brittany Danilov who allowed one run on six hits, while striking out three in six innings.

In the nightcap, John Carroll reeled off two big innings as its bats continued to be hot, clubbing a total of 13 hits in the contest. The hosts led by only a run (1-0) after two complete innings, however, a five-run third inning and a fourth-run sixth sealed the Scots' fate.

In the circle for John Carroll, the duo of Sam Thompson, who went the first five frames, and Lauren Beatty, who recorded three outs, limited Wooster to four hits. Junior Priscilla Staples collected her first double of the spring, while Kim Skully, Caitlin Gaffney, and Kelley each had singles.

Going the distance on the mound for the Scots was Kelley, who allowed 13 hits and 10 runs, while striking out four and issuing three walks in the complete game effort. Thompson picked up the win for the Blue Streaks, scattering two hits, fanning four and walking two batters, while Beatty allowed two singles and struck out one.

The Scots, 2-6 in North Coast Athletic Conference play, will look to bounce back Saturday when they jump back into league action with a trip to Ohio Wesleyan University (18-9-1, 3-1 NCAC) for a scheduled 1 p.m. twinbill.
