John Carroll Bats Hot As Wooster Falls Twice, 10-1 and 10-0
Home-standing John Carroll took advantage of the warmer weather against Wooster, as the Blue Streaks utilized a big day at the plate, along with solid performances in the circle, to sweep both ends of a softball doubleheader with the Fighting Scots, 10-1 and 10-0.
Home-standing John Carroll University took advantage of the
warmer weather against The College of Wooster, as the Blue Streaks
utilized a big day at the plate, along with solid performances in
the circle, to sweep both ends of a softball doubleheader in
University Heights, Ohio, with the Fighting Scots, 10-1 and
10-0.
In the first game, the Scots (4-28) jumped on the scoreboard in
the top of the first inning. Junior Andrea
Kelley blasted her first career home run, giving the Scots a
quick 1-0 advantage.
John Carroll (19-7) wasted no time answering back, smacking four
hits and scoring four runs in the first frame. The visitors tacked
on a single run in the second, three more in the third and an
additional two runs in the sixth inning, ending the game with 13
hits en route to the victory.
Wooster managed six hits in the game, as junior Rachel
Gaines posted a 2-for-3 opener on singles to right field in the
first and third frames.
Katie
Pifer suffered the loss on the mound, throwing five complete
innings and allowing 10 runs, six of which were earned, as the Scot
defense committed two errors. The fourth-year Scot struck out four
and walked two. Picking up the win for John Carroll was Brittany
Danilov who allowed one run on six hits, while striking out three
in six innings.
In the nightcap, John Carroll reeled off two big innings as its
bats continued to be hot, clubbing a total of 13 hits in the
contest. The hosts led by only a run (1-0) after two complete
innings, however, a five-run third inning and a fourth-run sixth
sealed the Scots' fate.
In the circle for John Carroll, the duo of Sam Thompson, who went
the first five frames, and Lauren Beatty, who recorded three outs,
limited Wooster to four hits. Junior Priscilla
Staples collected her first double of the spring, while Kim
Skully, Caitlin
Gaffney, and Kelley each had singles.
Going the distance on the mound for the Scots was Kelley, who
allowed 13 hits and 10 runs, while striking out four and issuing
three walks in the complete game effort. Thompson picked up the win
for the Blue Streaks, scattering two hits, fanning four and walking
two batters, while Beatty allowed two singles and struck out
one.
The Scots, 2-6 in North Coast Athletic Conference play, will look
to bounce back Saturday when they jump back into league action with
a trip to Ohio Wesleyan University (18-9-1, 3-1 NCAC) for a
scheduled 1 p.m. twinbill.
