Denison Utilizes Late Scoring in Game One to Take NCAC Twinbill

The Denison University softball team led by a 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning in game one, but the Big Red scored three runs in its half of the frame for a 5-1 lead they would never relinquish. That momentum carried over into the second game of a scheduled softball doubleheader, as the host Big Red went on to sweep The College of Wooster, taking game two by an 8-0 count in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday.

Denison hurler Sam Rumschlag and Wooster pitcher Andrea Kelley hooked up in a pitchers' duel in the opener. The hosts plated a single tally in the first inning, but Wooster evened the score in the top of the third frame. Lauren Sargi led off the inning with a double to center field, was sacrificed over to third, and scored the Scots' lone run on a throwing error.

The Big Red (12-9, 4-0 NCAC) responded back with a run in the bottom of the third, and tacked on three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth for the final margin.

Kelley took the loss on the mound for Wooster, falling to 2-10 on the year, as she gave up five runs, two earned, on nine hits while striking out two and walking four in a complete six-inning performance. Rumschlag, who struck out seven in the circle, helped her cause at the plate going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

In game two, the Big Red smacked 11 hits with Alex Murray going 3-for-3 with a homerun and two RBI, and Mary Beth Krolikowski going 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the offensive charge for the hosts.

The Scots (2-22, 0-4 NCAC) picked up their two hits of the nightcap on a Natalie Worcester infield single in the third inning, and a Priscilla Staples' single in the fourth.

Lauren Swinehart was tagged with the loss in the circle for Wooster, throwing 4.1 innings, giving up eight runs, six earned, while fanning four batters and walking two, to watch her record fall to 0-2 on the year.

For Denison, Leslie Brenner improved to 5-5 on the season with a five-inning, three-strikeout showing in the circle, while allowing just the two hits.

The Scots will be back in action on Sunday when they head to fellow Northeast Ohio institution Case Western Reserve University at 1 p.m., as they play their fourth doubleheader in six days.
