Marietta Sweeps Twinbill from Wooster, 3-1 and 9-0

WOOSTER, Ohio - Visiting Marietta College came to town and spoiled the home-opener for The College of Wooster, as the Pioneers used a big day at the plate and solid performances on the mound to sweep both ends of a doubleheader with the Fighting Scots, 3-1 and 9-0.

In the first game, Marietta (12-6) wasted no time getting on the board, smacking two hits and scoring two runs in the first frame, and tacked on a single tally in the third for a 3-0 advantage.

The Scots (2-16) answered in their half of the fifth when sophomore Lauren Sargi led off the frame with a double to left-center field.  She promptly moved over to third on a bunt single by freshman Rachel Frank, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Natalie Worcester. However, Marietta starter Amanda Strong worked out of the inning, and shut down the Wooster offense over the final two frames.

Sargi and Frank were each 2-for-3 at the plate in the opener, as Sargi laced her first double of the season.

Junior Andrea Kelley suffered the loss on the mound, throwing her eighth complete game in nine starts, and allowing three runs on six hits, striking out two and walking two. Strong picked up the win for Marietta, as she allowed the lone run in the fifth and surrendered six hits, while striking out three and walking one.

In the nightcap, Marietta's bats caught fire, as the Pioneers clubbed 12 hits in the contest.

Marietta went scoreless in the first inning, however, a five-run second inning and two more in both the third and fifth innings all but sealed the Scots' fate.

Wooster loaded the bases in both the third and fifth innings, but Marietta pitcher Megan Born squeezed her way out of both frames dashing the Scots' hope.

At the plate, junior Rachel Gaines went 2-for-3, while sophomore Caitlin Gaffney, freshman Marissa Stover, and senior Kim Skully each collected a hit for Wooster.

Going the distance on the mound for the Scots was senior Katie Pifer, who allowed 12 hits and nine earned runs, while striking out three and walking three in the complete game effort. Born picked up the win for the Pioneers, scattering five hits and also fanning three and walking three.

The Scots will look to bounce back on Monday, when they play host to Ohio Athletic Conference foe Baldwin-Wallace College (10-6) for a scheduled 3:30 p.m. twinbill.
