Sixth-Inning Rally in Opener Earns Scots Split Against Kenyon

WOOSTER, Ohio – Trailing 4-2 headed into the bottom of the sixth inning in game one, the College of Wooster softball team scratched together three runs and held on for a 5-4 win in the opener of its North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader with Kenyon College Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Scots couldn't complete the sweep, however, falling in the nightcap 6-0.

Down by two at 4-2, Lauren Sargi led off the inning for Wooster with a single to right field and advanced to second on a Rachel Frank walk. After Kenyon starter Brittany Vanegas recorded a strikeout, Jenny Dillon replaced her in the circle. The next batter up for the Scots was Lauren Swinehart, who reached on an error, and was promptly followed by back-to-back RBI singles from Priscilla Staples, Kim Skully, and Rachel Gaines plating Swinehart giving Wooster a 5-4 lead.

In the top of the seventh, the Ladies loaded the bases before Wooster senior hurler Katie Pifer wiggled out of the inning inducing a ground ball to Gaffney at shortstop who flipped it to Staples at second for the final out and the one-run victory for the hosts.

Kenyon (15-11, 4-4 NCAC) took the early lead in the first game with four runs on six hits in the top of second inning.

Wooster (4-26, 2-6 NCAC) came back in the bottom of the frame as Caitlin Gaffney reached on a throwing error, and came around to score on a double by Sargi to straightaway center field.

The Scots drew to within two at 4-2 in the home half of the third when Staples reached on a throwing error, moved over to second on a Skully single through the left side. Both moved up a base via a Gaines' base hit through the right side of the infield, and Staples scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Andrea Kelley.

Pifer improved her record to 2-10 this season in the circle for Wooster. She allowed four runs on 14 hits while walking two.

The Ladies again took the early lead in the second game, but this time they made it stick. The visitors plated four runs in the first, one in the second, and one in the fifth for the final 6-0 count.

Wooster's lineup couldn't manufacture any offense against Dillon (8-3), who held the Scot bats to just four hits. She struck out five and issued one walk.

Staples and Swinehart each managed a hit in both games, as Staples went 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored, and Swinehart 2-for-6 to lead the Scots in the doubleheader.  Skully and Gaines also picked up two base knocks, while Sargi went 2-for-3 in the first game with one run scored and an RBI.

Ellen Witkowski led Kenyon with a pair of hits in each game and finished 6-for-8 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Kelly Adams went 4-for-7 with a run scored.

Wooster takes a break from conference play this Tuesday with a road trip to John Carroll University (17-7) for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader first pitch.
