Scots Drop Season Finale to Wittenberg

WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster softball team saw its season come to a close Saturday afternoon as visiting North Coast Athletic Conference foe Wittenberg University used solid pitching and timely hitting to take two contests from the Fighting Scots, 8-0 and 2-1.

Wittenberg (15-19, 7-5 NCAC) held the Scot bats in check in the opener, as Tiger hurler Rachael Hatcher didn't allow a hit with six strikeouts. She allowed two walks to Caitlin Gaffney in the first and seventh innings, and neither time Gaffney advanced.

The Tigers put a crooked number on the board early, plating four runs in the first inning on five hits and two Wooster errors, and then added another score in the second. The visitors stretched the advantage to 6-0, thanks to another Wooster miscue in the top of the fifth, and added two more tallies in the seventh.

In the second game, Wooster (6-34, 3-11 NCAC) jumped on the board in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back one-out singles from Priscilla Staples and Gaffney, along with a Rachel Gaines' walk, loaded the bases. On a 2-1 pitch, junior Andrea Kelley smacked a single to left-center for her 13 RBI of the spring, bringing home Staples from third. However, Wittenberg starter Brooke Boswell worked her way out of the jam, getting a fly out to right field and a base-running mistake by the Scots.

The score remained in Wooster's favor until the top of the sixth. The Tigers tallied two runs on just one hit, aided by two Wooster throwing errors, and held on for the narrow one-run conference victory.

Senior Katie Pifer took the loss for Wooster in the opening contest. She racked up her 15th complete game of the spring, giving up eight runs, six earned, on 13 hits, while walking three and striking out two. Kelley was credited with the loss in the nightcap, notching her 18th complete game, surrendering two unearned runs on four hits, striking out five and not walking a batter.

Hatcher picked up the victories in both contests and improved to 11-5, going the final 3.1 innings of game two in relief, not allowing a hit while walking one and striking out three.
