Scots Tripped Up Twice by the Spartans 7-0, 4-1

Host Case Western Reserve University scored five runs combined in its final two at-bats in the first game, and held the College of Wooster bats in check in the second, downing the Fighting Scots softball team 7-0 and 4-1 in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Mather Field.

In the opener, Case (11-15) plated two runs in the bottom of the third inning, and tacked on two more in the fifth and three in the sixth en route to the seven-run victory.

The Scots (2-24) were held to five hits in the game. Junior Priscilla Staples went 2-for-3, while freshman Lauren Swinehart, senior Kim Skully, and sophomore Caitlin Gaffney each had one hit. Case was led by Anneliese Fetterman's 2-for-3 performance with two RBI and a run scored, as four other players each notched a mark in the hit column.

Andrea Kelley picked up the complete game setback on the mound for the Scots, giving up seven runs, four of which were earned as the Wooster defense committed five errors, while striking out three and giving up four walks. Ruthe Sagartz earned the win for the Spartans, scattering five hits over seven innings and striking out seven.

In game two, the hosts jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after one inning, and the score remained that way until the bottom of the fourth when the Spartans tacked on three more tallies for a 4-0 advantage.

Being shut down through the first five innings, freshman Bonnie Berg registered the first hit with a leadoff triple to right-center field in the top of the sixth, coming around to score on an error by the Spartan left fielder.

Also tallying a hit for Wooster's other hit in the nightcap came during the sixth inning, as freshman Rachel Frank slapped a hit down the third-base line.

Angel Rice led the Spartans at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, and Kaele Boden ended the game 2-for-2 with a run batted in.

Taking the loss on the mound for Wooster was Katie Pifer, who surrendered five hits and four runs, two of which were earned, in six complete innings of work. Sagartz earned her second victory of the afternoon for Case, throwing seven innings, while fanning four and walking three.

Next up for the Scots will be a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday as Wooster plays host to Oberlin College (4-12, 0-4 NCAC) for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
