Wooster and Baldwin-Wallace Each Earn a Tough "W" in Twin Bill

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster softball team and visiting Baldwin-WallaceBaldwin-Wallace College split a pair of games that both came down to the final out on Tuesday, as the Scots comeback bid fell short in a 4-3 game one loss, but a high powered inning allowed them to prevail 4-2 in the nightcap.

The Scots (11-9) and Yellow Jackets (8-5) engaged in a pitching dual in the opener, as Wooster trailed just 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Wooster then committed two errors and allowed three runs in the sixth, putting them behind 4-0 entering the seventh.

Wooster's bats then came alive, as Priscilla Staples got the Scots' comeback attempt started with a hard hit single to third base, and Erica Villa drove her in with a shot threw the middle. Lauren Swinehart and Gina Pirolozzi brought Wooster with one run with RBI's later in the inning, but Baldwin-Wallace's pitcher Sarah Baker escaped by causing a pop up to end the game.

The second game was eerily similar to the first, as Wooster again ended up trailing 1-0 heading into the later innings, but a productive fifth inning changed this tilt's outcome. Staples again got a rally started by doubling to start the inning, and she later advanced to third base on a wild pitch.

Rachel Franks tied the game by driving in Staples with an RBI single, and Villa and Swinehart later got on to load the bases. Jenn Horton then came through with a deep shot to center field that scored all three runners, giving Wooster a 4-1 lead, and then Horton preserved the win with solid pitching to close the game.

By recording hits in both games today, Kelley Johnson has now hit in 16-consecutive games, breaking the program's all-time hit streak record of 14 games. She went 3-for-8 in the series, and is now batting .491 on the season.

Villa has been equally impressive, as she went 4-for-4 in the first game, and added another hit in the second, to bring her average up to .491 as well. Staples went 4-for-6 with two runs scored, and Horton was 2-for-3 with three RBI's in the nightcap.

Pirolozzi totaled three strikeouts and walked only one batter in the Scots one run loss in game one, while Horton gave up just two earned runs and fanned four batters while improving to 6-3 in the final game.

The Scots will face their first North Coast Athletic Conference opponent on April 7 when they travel to OberlinOberlin College (2-12) for a twin bill at 3:30.
