Scots Allow Spartans Just One Run in Decisive Sweep

WOOSTER, Ohio – The bats showed up in the nightcap, but it was The College of Wooster's pitching that was the constant in Tuesday's doubleheader sweep, as Jenn Horton and Allie Webb combined to allow just one run in their two starts to lead the Scots to 2-1 and 12-0 triumphs in just its second home outing this season.

The Scots (16-10) struck early in game one, as Kelley Johnson hit a lead off double and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Lauren Swinehart later drove her in with a hard hit single, and then stole second, allowing an ensuing Caitlin Gaffney double to plate her and give Wooster a 2-0 advantage.

Horton didn't allow the Spartans (7-27) a hit until the fourth inning, when Case Western Reserve batted around a bit and produced one run on a Cara Sullivan RBI single. From that moment on, Horton was lights out, allowing just two hits over the final three innings to help Wooster eek out a 2-1 win.

The nightcap started similar to the opener, with Kelley Johnson and Lauren Swinehart getting on base early to spark a Wooster scoring run. Priscilla Staples drove in the runners by blasting a deep double to the wall, and then a costly Spartan error scored another two Scots later in the inning to put them up 4-0.

Wooster batted through the order and then some in a seven-run third inning that saw two bases loaded walks and three errors score runners, along with a single by Swinehart that drove in two. Meanwhile in the circle, Webb allowed just two hits in three innings pitched, and Gina Pirolozzi closed the run-rule shortened game by pitching her own pair of scoreless innings.

Horton improved to 9-3 (.750) on the season and totaled nine strikeouts in her lid-lifting gem, while Webb (1-2) picked up her first career win while lowering her season ERA to 3.82.

Johnson paced Wooster with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate with three runs scored and a pair of RBI, while Swinehart was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two stolen bases.

The Scots will hit the road to visit HeidelbergHeidelberg University (17-5) on Thursday with the first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
