Scots Roll 8-2 in Opener, but Split Twin Bill at Heidelberg

Despite building early leads in both games, The College of Wooster softball team settled for a split with HeidelbergHeidelberg University on Thursday, winning 8-2 and losing 4-8 in doubleheader action at Mayer Field in Tiffin, Ohio.

The Scots (17-11) got to work in the second inning of the lid-lifter, as Lauren Sargi singled, Priscilla Staples walked, and Rachel Gaines reached on a fielder's choice that loaded the bases. Kelley Johnson hit an RBI single, and Lauren Swinehart drove in a pair later in the inning that gave Wooster a quick 3-0 lead.

Then in the third inning the Scots tacked on another four runs, highlighted by a Johnson three-run homer, and Wooster had built a 7-0 cushion. Meanwhile, Heidelberg's batters didn't have an answer for Jenn Horton, as the Scots' hurler allowed just six hits and struck out seven in the circle to improve her record to 10-3 on the season.

Wooster once again got on the scoreboard first in the nightcap, as Gina Pirolozzi drove in two runs with a bases loaded double and Rachel Gaines recorded another RBI that put the Scots ahead 3-0 after the first inning. This time around Heidelberg answered back with its own three-run second inning, and then took the lead outright with a five-run outburst in the fifth inning. The Scots were only able to add one more run in the sixth when Gaines touched home on an error, but Heidelberg's strong pitching prevented a comeback.

Johnson paced Wooster's hitting leaders by going 4-for-9 at the plate with four RBI and three runs scored. Next in line was Staples who was 3-for-6 with two walks, and Swinehart went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Heidelberg was led by Ashley Stromack's 5-for-7 effort, while Andrea Gerdeman and Kaitlin Esordi both delivered home runs during the twin bill.

The Scots, who are currently 3-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, will host a doubleheader against Ohio WesleyanOhio Wesleyan University (14-12, 1-3 NCAC) this Saturday at 1 p.m.
