Scots Fall Short in Doubleheader Setback to Wittenberg

Despite jumping out to an early lead in the lid-lifter, and rallying from seven runs down to draw within two in the nightcap, The College of Wooster was eventually swept by WittenbergWittenberg University 3-2 and 11-5 on Thursday in North Coast Athletic Conference action at Springfield, Ohio.

The Scots (19-19, 5-7 NCAC) got on the scoreboard first in game one, as Kelley Johnson singled to start the first inning and went on to score on an error during the next Wooster at bat. Caitlin Gaffney later plated Erica Villa with a hard hit infield shot and the Scots took a 2-0 lead, which they held onto until the sixth inning.

It was then that the Tigers (17-17, 8-4 NCAC) finally made some noise against Jenn Horton by recording three hits in the inning, including a two-run double by Jessi Allen that tied the game 2-2. Finally in the bottom of the eighth inning, Wittenberg loaded up the bases, and Jade Chivington delivered the game-winning RBI with a sacrifice fly to deep right field.

Horton tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts, and was tagged with only two earned runs in 7.2 innings in the circle. At the plate, Horton and Johnson were both 2-for-4, while Gaffney produced the team's lone RBI, her 14th this season.

The second game was all Wittenberg in the early goings, as it tacked on two runs in the first inning, and another four runs in the second, highlighted by doubles from Brooke Boswell and Tori Amicon that each plated two runners. Eventually trailing 7-0 in the top of the fifth inning, Johnson smashed a three-run homer that sparked Wooster's comeback bid.

Lauren Sargi doubled to right center to drive in two more runs in the sixth that drew the Scots within 7-5, but a Chivington home run in the bottom of the inning gave Wittenberg an 11-5 lead it would not relinquish.

Johnson paced the Scots with another 2-for-4 effort, this time adding three RBI and a home run to her stat line. Rachel Frank was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Sargi was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

The Scots will wrap up one of their winningest seasons in recent history by hosting a doubleheader against conference foe DenisonDenison University (23-13, 7-3 NCAC) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
