Swinehart's Grand Slam Keys Wooster Sweep at Oberlin

Lauren Swinehart smashed a grand slam in the nightcap, and The College of Wooster softball team combined to score 23 runs on 29 hits in all, powering past OberlinOberlin College 9-3 and 14-4 on Wednesday in a twin bill at Oberlin, Ohio.

The Scots (13-9, 2-0 NCAC) trailed 3-1 early in the opener, but the offense started to click as soon as Swinehart drew a walk to open the top of the third inning. Jenn Horton doubled in Wooster's next at back, and Caitlin Gaffney followed her with an RBI single down the third base line. Lauren Sargi and Rachel Gaines both drove in runs later in the inning to give Wooster a 4-3 lead.

Wooster's bats continued to produce throughout the game, as it amassed another 12 hits and scored runs in three more innings, while Horton allowed Oberlin just two hits over her last five innings pitched.

The nightcap lacked drama, as Wooster put together a five-run second inning, and six-run third, to take an 11-run lead, and eventually end the game in five innings. With a 2-0 lead and the bases loaded in the second inning, Lauren Swinehart hit a grand slam to give Wooster a big lead and momentum.

Then in the third, Gina Pirolozzi hit a two-run homer, the first of her career, and Staples smacked a triple that scored another two, to put Wooster up 10-0. Swinehart ended the inning with an RBI single to give Wooster an 11-0 lead, and the Scots added three more runs in the fourth before the game wrapped up an inning later.

Horton (7-3) allowed seven hits and just three earned runs in Wooster's early win, and Pirolozzi (6-4) gave up nine hits and didn't allow a walk while notching a victory in the second game.

Leading the Scots offensive explosion was Swinehart, who was 4-for-4 in the first game, and finished the evening 6-for-7 with seven RBI. Gaffney was zeroed in at the plate as well, matching Swinehart with a 6-for-7 effort while driving in two runs. Kelley Johnson saw her hitting streak come to an end in the nightcap, but not before extending her school record to 17 games with a single up the middle in the opener.

Wooster will continue conference play on the road this weekend, as it battles KenyonKenyon College (8-12, 0-2 NCAC) in a double-header on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
