Timely Triples Lead Wooster by Kenyon 7-5 in Lid-Lifter

The College of Wooster softball team split a twin bill with North Coast Athletic Conference foe KenyonKenyon College on Saturday, using a two-run seventh inning to take the lid-lifter 7-5, and then succumbing to the Ladies' bats in an 11-3 loss in the nightcap at Gambier, Ohio.

The Scots (14-10, 3-1 NCAC) didn't waste time generating runs in the opener, as a Jenn Horton double to right center plated Erica Villa to put them ahead 1-0 after one inning. Then in the second, Rachel Gaines drove in a run on a single, and Lauren Swinehart smashed an RBI double with the bases loaded to put Wooster up 4-1.

Down by one (4-3) in the third, Kenyon allowed Caitlin Gaffney to score on a throwing error, but the Ladies tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth to tie the game 5-5. Both teams combined for just three hits over the next two innings, but Wooster got a spark when it needed one in the top of the seventh, as Swinehart led off the inning with a triple to deep center.

Gaffney plated Swinehart moments later with a triple of her own, and a Priscilla Stales RBI single gave Wooster a 7-5 lead. Horton then forced three-consecutive Kenyon batters to groundout in the bottom of the seventh to ensure Wooster notched the win.

The nightcap got away from the Scots in a hurry, as Kenyon took advantage of throwing errors, hit batters, and timely hitting to build a 5-0 first inning cushion. Wooster clawed into the deficit, as Gaines hit an RBI single in the second, and Gina Pirolozzi drove in a pair of runs with a double in the third, but that was all the offense the Scots could generate. Over the final two innings of the game, Kenyon's pitching didn't allow another Wooster hit, and the Ladies produced five more runs at the plate to finish an 11-3 run-rule victory.

Villa continued her torrid pace, as she finished the day 5-for-7 with a triple and two runs scored, improving her batting average to .517. Swinehart was 3-for-7, and Gaines went 2-for-6 with an RBI in each game.

Wooster will host Case Western ReserveCase Western Reserve University (7-25) this Tuesday in double-header action, with the first game set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
