Scots Overwhelmed in 15-4 and 9-0 Losses at Marietta

The College of Wooster softball team suffered a pair of disappointing losses on Friday, as MariettaMarietta College's aggressive hitting and solid pitching dealt the Scots 15-4 and 9-0 losses in a twin bill at Marietta, Ohio.

The Pioneers (10-4) racked up eight runs on 11 hits in the first two innings of game one, but the Scots (10-8) generated three runs in the top of the third to draw within 8-3. Marietta then overwhelmed Wooster in the bottom of third, as it batted through the entire lineup and then some on its way to an eight-run inning that resulted in an insurmountable 15-3 cushion.

In the night cap it was the Pioneers pitching that did Wooster in, as hurler Chelsea Chaffin allowed just three hits and one walk in a dominant performance in the circle. Down 6-0 in the fourth inning, Wooster built some momentum with singles from Rachel Gaines and Priscilla Staples, but Chaffin got Marietta out of the inning unharmed.

Freshman Kelley Johnson recorded hits in both games, extending her hitting streak to 14 games, which ties the longest such streak amassed by a Wooster batter in 10 years. Caitlin Gaffney went 2-4 with an RBI during the double-header, and Erica Villa also smacked in an RBI during her 2-for-6 effort at the plate. Staples was the other Scot to amass two hits in Marietta.

Michelle Sayre had a dominant day for the Pioneers, going 5-for-6 with two homeruns and eight RBI.

Wooster will look for more success on Tuesday when they visit Baldwin-WallaceBaldwin-Wallace College for a double-header starting at 3:30 p.m.
