Pirolozzi's No-Hitter Highlights Scots' 5-3 Start to Spring Break Trip

Now midway through its annual spring break trip to Fort Myers, Fla., The College of Wooster softball team has posted a 5-3 record in the standings, one of its best starts in program history, that was highlighted by first-year pitcher Gina Pirolozzi's no-hitter on Thursday.

Solid pitching has been the story early in the 2010 campaign, as the Fighting Scots rotation is allowing less than two earned runs per game, with three shutouts and two one-run ballgames to its credit. Pirolozzi (3-0, 1.20 ERA) had an historic outing in the team's 5-0 defeat of Rockford College, becoming just the third pitcher in Wooster history to record a no-hitter, and first since Natalie Barone in 2005.

Also making an impact has been fellow first-year pitcher Jenn Horton (2-1, 1.47 ERA), who almost completed her own no-hitter, by striking out 11 batters and giving up just one base knock in Wooster's 15-0 drubbing of Wheelock College. Senior infielder Priscilla Staples also was dominant in the Wheelock rout, smashing a homerun and driving in a career-high six RBI to lead the offensive onslaught. Staples is batting .318 and leads the team with 11 RBI.

Freshman Erica Villa is having an excellent start to her collegiate career, as she leads all Scots' hitters with a .524 batting average (11-of-21), which includes a 3-for-4 effort against HeidelbergHeidelberg University. Kelley Johnson, also a first-year addition, is next in line with a .435 clip (10-of-23), and also has eight assists and 22 putouts in the infield.

Rounding out the batting leaders at the spring break mid-point are Lauren Sargi (.375), who has knocked in three runs, and the squads run leader Caitlin Gaffney, who has scored eight times and is batting a solid .348.

Wooster has another eight games to go before heading back home following the March 17 finale, including tilts with Polytechnic Institute of New York University and University of Wisconsin-Platteville on Saturday morning.
