Johnson Breaks Wooster’s Single Season Hits Record in Win Over Allegheny

WOOSTER, Ohio – Kelley Johnson started game one against Allegheny College with three-consecutive singles, and her third one was special, as she surpassed the program's all-time hits record and helped lead The College of Wooster to a 6-3 win over its North Coast Athletic Conference foe. The Scots dropped the nightcap 0-3, and remain .500 (5-5) in NCAC action.

Johnson entered the twinbill needing three hits to overtake Brianne Diorio (43 hits, 2003) as the all-time leader in the category, and she recorded the record-breaking hit in the opener during the bottom of the fourth inning. Johnson finished the doubleheader 4-for-7 at the plate, pushing her hit total to 45 and batting average to .429.

From a team standpoint, the Scots (19-17, 5-5 NCAC) broke two other single season records set during the 2006 season, by accumulating the most hits (299) and total bases (399) in team history.

Down 2-0 early in the lid-lifter, Wooster responded in the bottom of the first inning when Jenn Horton smashed a bases loaded double into left field that scored all three runners. The Scots tacked on another set of runs in the second, when Lauren Swinehart hit her team-leading third triple in another bases loaded situation that plated three more and gave them a 6-2 lead.

In the circle, Horton allowed just one more run to the Gators (11-18, 4-6 NCAC) over the ensuing five innings, and finished the game with three strikeouts and her 11th win this season.

Allegheny's Amanda Downey pitched a gem in the nightcap, allowing just five hits and two walked batters in seven scoreless innings of work. Johnson, Erica Villa, and Rachel Gaines were the lone Scots to record hits in both games.

Wooster will need all the wins it can get to propel itself into the NCAC Tournament, starting Thursday when it visits WittenbergWittenberg University (14-16, 5-3 NCAC) at 3:30 p.m.
