Wooster Wraps Up Non-League Play With Losses to JCU

Resting several of its regular starters for some key upcoming conference games, The College of Wooster was swept by visiting northeast Ohio foe John CarrollJohn Carroll University 10-0 and 5-0 in non-league softball action on Thursday afternoon.

John Carroll (20-14) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opener, taking advantage of a couple of errors for two unearned runs in the first inning and then receiving a grand slam from Erin Riccardi during the second.

Behind by six, Wooster (18-16) notched its first hit, a Kelley Johnson triple, in the bottom of the third, but was unable to convert it into a score. The Fighting Scots also threatened to no avail with a pair of fourth-inning singles before the Blue Streaks pulled away with a tally in the fifth and three in the sixth.

The storyline of game two was a near no-hitter for John Carroll's Samantha Thompson, however, Gina Pirolozzi broke it up with a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh. Thompson induced the following two batters into groundouts and then got a strikeout to complete the one-hit shutout.

After giving up two runs in the top of the first and three more in the second, two of which were unearned, Wooster's Allie Webb settled down and pitched a solid game. She went the distance, yielding the three earned runs on eight hits.

Offensively on the day, the Scots were paced by Pirolozzi, who was also their game-one pitcher. She combined to go 2-for-5 with a walk.

Next on the schedule for Wooster is a key North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at arch-rival WittenbergWittenberg University (14-16, 5-3 NCAC) this Saturday afternoon.
