The College of Wooster softball team split a doubleheader with Marietta College on Wednesday afternoon, as the Scots bounced back from a 12-4 defeat to take the nightcap by a final score of 4-3 at Marietta, Ohio.

In the opener, Marietta (9-7) raced out to a 5-0 lead after a four-run third inning, but Wooster (13-5) answered back in the top of the fourth. Lauren Swinehart led off the frame with a double to right center, and Demi Hart followed that up with a single to put runners on the corners. The Scots then used smart base running to plate two runs, as Swinehart scored on an error, and Hart crossed home after a pitch got by the catcher.

Later in the inning, Paige Goldberg drove in Carly Schoenstein to pull the Scots within two (5-3), until Marietta added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase its advantage to 7-3. Finally, in the fifth inning, Jenn Horton blasted a solo home run for Wooster, but Marietta exploded for five tallies to win a run-rule shortened game.

The Scots again got themselves in a hole in the later game, as Marietta scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to go up 2-0. This time, Wooster responded by tying the game in the top of the second, as Swinehart hit an RBI single to score Horton, and then later came around to score herself, after Marietta made an error trying to throw out the speedy outfielder stealing third, which allowed her to take an extra base.

The score remained deadlocked at 2-2 until the top of the fifth, when Erica Villa singled to center field to plate Rachel Frank and give the Scots their first lead of the day. Wooster then added an insurance run in seventh inning, via a two-out RBI from Goldberg, which proved to be the difference, as Marietta threatened later in the frame, but was only able to add one more run.

Goldberg, Swinehart, and Hart each collected three hits on the day. Gina Pirolozzi, who pitched the second game, improved to 7-2 on the season after striking out four and allowing seven hits and three earned runs.

Wooster aims to continue its hot start with a doubleheader against North Coast Athletic Conference foe Allegheny College next Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
