The College of Wooster softball team got back on track during its doubleheader with Hiram College, as the Fighting Scots swept the Terriers by final scores of 10-6 and 2-1 on Friday evening in North Coast Athletic Conference action at Hiram, Ohio.

It took extra innings to decide the opener, as the Scots (15-7, 2-2 NCAC) and Terriers (9-13, 1-3 NCAC) carried a 3-3 tie into the ninth frame. Demi Hart led off the top of the inning with a triple, and then Allegheny intentionally walked both Jenn Horton and Lauren Swinehart to load the bases. Moments later, Hart scored on a wild pitch, and Pirolozzi walked in an RBI, giving Wooster a 5-3 lead.

The Scots' offense was just getting started, though, as they produced another five runs in the ninth despite having just one out remaining. Paige Goldberg plated a pair with a deep double, Erica Villa knocked in a run, and finally, Hart hit her second triple of the inning that scored two more runners, giving Wooster a commanding 10-3 lead.

Gina Pirolozzi was touched up a bit in the circle in the bottom of the ninth, but she eventually worked her way out of the jam to give Wooster a 10-6 victory. The junior hurler pitched all nine innings, totaling eight strikeouts along the way.

In the second game, Wooster got on the scoreboard first in the top of the fourth, as Carly Schoenstein doubled to drive in a run, and later, Skye Patterson picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice that put the Scots ahead 2-0.

Horton was excellent in the circle, allowing no runs and just two hits through six innings. Finally, in the seventh inning, the Terriers did manage to score an unearned run, but that was all they could muster, as Horton forced a groundout to end the game and secure a narrow 2-1 win.

The Scots collected 13 hits in the opener, including a perfect 5-for-5 effort at the plate from Hart. The freshman is now batting .468 on the year. Also noteworthy, Wooster recorded just two hits in their victory in the nightcap, both coming off the bat of Schoenstein.

Next, Wooster visits NCAC rival Wittenberg University on Wednesday. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
