WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster softball team had never swept a doubleheader with Marietta College in eight previous attempts, but that changed Wednesday, as the Fighting Scots took down the Pioneers 6-1 and 5-3.

The Scots (11-7) kicked off the opening game with a four-hit first inning, as Paige Goldberg, Demi Hart, Jenn Horton, and Carly Schoenstein each collected singles, with Schoenstein's driving in a run to give Wooster an early 1-0 lead.

Skye Patterson had a key hit in the fourth inning that helped her team go ahead 3-0, but it was in the fifth inning when the Scots added more than enough cushion to seal the outcome.

With one out in the fifth, Hart doubled to deep center field, and then Horton grounded out which allowed Hart to advance to third. Now with two outs, the Scots began to make some noise, as Schoenstein, Kasey Fiedler, and Aundrea Atwell drove in three-consecutive runs to give Wooster a 6-0 advantage. Fiedler's RBI came on the first triple of her young career.

The Pioneers (13-7) scored an unearned run in the seventh inning, but that was all the offense they were able to manage with Horton in the circle. Wooster's ace allowed just four hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out four in the victory.

Marietta took a short-lived lead over Wooster to start the nightcap, as it scored twice in the top of the first inning, but the Scots answered back quickly.

Goldberg led off the bottom of the inning with a double, and Taylor Raybuck moved her over to third with a sacrifice bunt. The very next batter was Hart, and she roped a double to left center field which scored Goldberg to pull Wooster within one (2-1). The Scots added three more runs in the frame, two via miscues from Marietta's defense, and another on an RBI single from Schoenstein, to go ahead 4-2.

The Scots generated another run in the fourth inning thanks to their No. 8 and No. 9 hitters, Kristyn Swanson and Patterson, who doubled and singled, respectively, and then they relied on pitcher Gina Pirolozzi the rest of the way. Marietta threatened a bit in the seventh inning, with two runners on and just one out, but Pirolozzi retired the next two batters, including a strikeout that ended the game.

Overall, Schoenstein was 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Hart was also 3-for-6, with an RBI, and three runs scored.

The Scots will be right back at it again tomorrow when they host a doubleheader with North Coast Athletic Conference foe Allegheny College that begins at 3:30 p.m.
