Shutouts Bookend First Half of Spring Trip as Scots Sit 5-3

 Jenna Kendall
 Bridget Serrurier

The College of Wooster softball team recorded three shutouts thus far this week, and sits at 5-3 at the midway point of its spring break trip at Fort Myers, Fla.

Wooster clicked in all three phases of the game in its season-opening 10-0 shutout over Edgewood College on Monday. The Fighting Scots' freshmen splashed onto the scene with Chelsea Copley belting a two-run homer in her first collegiate at bat, and Bridget Serrurier backing her up with a two-run double as part of a four-run second inning. In the fourth inning, Stephenie Little added a bases-clearing three-run double that at the time pushed the Scots' lead to nine.

The Scots were equally impressive in the circle with Maddy Chase hurling a two-hit shutout while striking out six. The sophomore right-hander helped her cause at the plate with a 3-for-3 outing - her first three collegiate at bats - while the defense had her back with Marissa Gorvet throwing out a runner at the plate in the top of the second inning.

Chase carried over her strong performance to Tuesday. After an 8-0 setback to Suffolk University to cap play on Monday, Wooster bounced right back with a 3-2 win over Alfred State.

In the circle Chase matched a career-high with seven strikeouts, while scattering seven hits in the contest with both runs being unearned. Then, at the plate, the sophomore delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh with a hard shot to the left side of the infield, plating Jamie Kenyon in the process.

Earlier in the Alfred game, Wooster had a big two-run single from Serrurier in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead.

Wooster dropped the second game of its Tuesday twin bill by a 6-3 tally to the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

The Scots turned in their second shutout of the week on Wednesday by a 6-0 count over Knox College.

Junior Jenna Kendall worked out of a jam in the top of the first, with the Scots' defense combining executing a rundown for the third out of the frame. From there, Kendall was lights out retiring the next 11 Knox hitters en route to finishing with a five-hit shutout.

The Scots' hurdler jump-started the offense as well with a leadoff double in the bottom of the second, and later came in to score on a Knox error for the first run of the game. Later in the contest, Kendall helped her cause again, ripping a RBI double down the leftfield line.

Wooster's furious rally came up short against the College at Brockport in the second half of Wednesday's double-dip as the Golden Eagles' withstood a four-spot from the Scots in the bottom of the seventh in the 8-4 contest.

Serrurier provided the big pop with a two-run homer – her second home run of the trip – in the seventh frame. Earlier in the inning, Copley added a RBI double and Gorvet came in to score via a wild pitch.

Wooster started Friday with an impressive 5-4 win over the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, winners of nine straight entering the contest.

The Scots did all of their damage in the sixth inning, with Copley having the biggest of the hits – a two-run ground-rule double to right. Wooster also had RBI hits from Kendall and Serrurier in the frame, with Little knocking in a run via a sacrifice fly.

The Scots late-game momentum carried over to the Castleton University contest, where Wooster rolled to an 8-0 shutout.

Wooster plated five runs in the third with Kasey Fiedler and Kendall both knocking in on pair of runs on their respective singles. Kendall added a two-run double in the fourth to give her a career-high four RBIs for the game.

In the circle, Kendall strung together a four-hitter while fanning two Castleton hitters.

Wooster's pitching staff has done its part with a combined 2.24 ERA with both Chase (1.91) and Kendall (1.97) sporting sub-2.00 marks. Chase has 24 strikeouts to go along with three wins while Kendall has not allowed a run to score in her last 14.1 innings of work.

The Scots' one-two pitching punch is also off to a scorching start at the plate with Kendall hitting a team-best .500 (12-for-24), while Chase is hitting .400 (10-for-25). Also making strong impressions are Serrurier and Copley, who have combined for 17 of the College's 35 RBIs, and are hitting .429 and .333 respectively.

Wooster opens the second half of its spring trip Saturday morning with a 9 a.m. clash with the University of Minnesota-Morris.
