The College of Wooster softball team ran into a hot-hitting University of Mount Union offense on Wednesday afternoon as the Purple Raiders swept the Fighting Scots 12-6 and 10-0 at the 23rd Street Field in Alliance, Ohio.

However, it was Wooster (9-9) who made noise early in its northern opener with a three-run third inning.

Marissa Gorvet opened the frame with a leadoff double down the left-field line, and came in to score two batters later via an RBI double from Maddy Chase. The Scots' second run came in on an RBI single from Bridget Serrurier. Wooster added its third run of the frame during a rundown.

Two innings later, Wooster struck for three runs again.

Serrurier smacked a one-out single to left, plating Taylor Raybuck in the process, and later came around to score the final run of the inning. Chase, who reached via a single up the middle also scored in the frame when Chelsea Copley knocked a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

The Purple Raiders' (15-9) bats exploded from there as Mount Union plated 12 runs on 11 hits the rest of the way.

In the nightcap, Mount Union pushed across nine runs on 10 hits in the first two frames.

Wooster, who had its leadoff hitters reach in the second, third, and fourth innings, really made some noise in the second when Stephenie Little's leadoff single was backed up by a two-out hit from Kasey Fiedler.

Serrurier paced the offense with two hits and a pair of RBIs on the day, while Chase added two hits and two runs.

Of note, Wooster held Mount Union's Brittany Baitt in check on the bases. The Purple Raiders' table-setter entered the week tied for eighth in Div. III with 21 stolen bases.

Entering play Wednesday, the Purple Raiders had scored at last six runs in 10 of their last 11 games.

Wooster remains on the road to take on Case Western Reserve University (12-16) in a twin bill on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
