Chase's Three-Hitter, Gorvet's Two-Run Double Highlight Wooster's Split at Allegheny

Marissa Gorvet

Sophomore Maddy Chase hurled another gem in the circle to lead The College of Wooster softball team to a 4-0 win in its North Coast Athletic Conference opener, but a late rally from Allegheny College gave the Gators a 7-4 win in the nightcap at Meadville, Pa. on Wednesday.

Chase fired her third shutout of the year in the first game, this time a three-hitter. Wooster's (10-12, 1-1 NCAC) defense was equally as impressive helping Chase set down 14 straight to end the game – all without the aid of a single strikeout.

Offensively, Wooster struck first in the top of the third when Taylor Raybuck led off the frame with a single to left. The senior eventually came around to score on an error. Chelsea Copley made it a two-run advantage when the first-year scored on a RBI groundout by Stephenie Little.

The Scots extended their lead an inning later when senior Marissa Gorvet knocked a two-run double over the centerfielder's head to plate Kasey Fiedler and Linea Brouse, who had reached via a double of her own one batter prior.

Allegheny's (5-9, 1-1 NCAC) Hailey Marth delivered the heartbreaking blow in the second game, clubbing a one-out walk-off grand slam down the left-field line in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Moments earlier, Wooster had just taken the lead back at 4-3 in the top of the inning when Raybuck came in to score on a Gator error.

Wooster scored a pair of runs in the first inning of the second game, and later added one in the fourth, but Allegheny countered right back in the bottom of both frames.

In the first inning, Raybuck jump-started the offense with an opposite-field leadoff triple. Two batters later, Bridget Serrurier knocked in the Scots' table-setter with an RBI groundout. Jenna Kendall later came in to score on an error.

Little kick-started things in the fourth frame with a leadoff double to left field. Fiedler came through two batters later with a sacrifice fly to plate the run.

Raybuck led the way at the plate on the afternoon with three hits and three runs. The left fielder was backed up by Little who had three hits of her own to go along with a RBI.

Chase, who pitched both games, scattered 10 hits and allowed seven runs (six earned) in the nightcap.

The Gators had a trio of hitters finish with three-hit days, while Allison Cabo only allowed two earned runs in 10 innings of work.

Notable, Wooster's win in the first game of the twin bill snapped Allegheny's eight-game win streak in the series.

Next, Wooster heads to Hiram College (5-17, 0-2 NCAC) for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
