Wooster’s Offense Explodes for 28 Hits in Sweep at Kenyon

 Maddy Chase
 Stephenie Little

Stephenie Little blasted a three-run home run in the seventh inning as part of a five-RBI first game, and Maddy Chase fired a five-hit complete game to headline The College of Wooster softball team's 9-1, 6-5 sweep over Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon at Gambier, Ohio.

Little broke through for her first big hit of the afternoon in the first game's third inning, blasting a two-out, two-run opposite field double to plate Chase and Bridget Serrurier who reached earlier in the frame on back-to-back singles. The double pushed the lead to 3-0.

Then, in the seventh, Little mashed her first home run of the season, bringing in Serrurier and Kendall on the four-base knock.

Later in the seventh inning, Marissa Gorvet extended the lead again poking a single up the middle to bring in pinch-runner Jamie Kenyon. The senior also had an RBI single an inning earlier that knocked in Linea Brouse who reached via a one-out single.

Wooster (13-13, 4-2 North Coast Athletic Conference) struck right away in the top of the first inning taking advantage of a Kenyon (13-14-1, 2-6 NCAC) miscue in the field. Then later, the Scots capitalized on a second error from the Ladies to score a run in the fifth inning.

Of note, Little's five RBIs marked the first by a Fighting Scot since Carly Schoenstein did likewise against Elms College on March 8, 2015.

In the circle, Chase allowed one unearned run on five hits while striking out five.

Little's big day at the plate carried over to the second game as the junior pushed Wooster's advantage to two in the first inning with a one-out single that brought in Serrurier.

Earlier in the Scots' turn at bat, Kendall came through with a single to plate Chase who reached on a one-out double for the game's first run.

The Scots continued their offensive surge in the second inning with Brouse, Gorvet and Taylor Raybuck reaching on three straight singles to load the bases with no outs. Wooster's top of the order came through with Chase stroking a RBI single up the middle that was backed up by Serrurier who punched one through on the left side of the infield to make it 4-0.

Kendall followed suit with a sharp single to center field to extend the lead to five.

Wooster struck again in the third with Kasey Fiedler leading off the frame with a triple down the right field line. The Scots' catcher came in moments later on a Brouse sacrifice fly.

Kenyon made things interesting with a two-spot in the fifth inning, prior to a three-run sixth frame.

Kendall picked up the win allowing four runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. Chase picked up her first save of the year firing 1.2 innings of relief while allowing one run on three hits.

Little finished the afternoon 4-for-8 at the plate with six RBIs. Of note, six Scots finished with at least three hits on the day.

Notable, Wooster recorded a season-high 14 hits in each game. The Scots had eight starters record a hit in each game.

Next, Wooster travels to Hiram College (8-18, 3-3 NCAC) for a 3:30 p.m. twin bill on Tuesdsay.
