Timely Hit, Clutch Pitching Key to Scots' 2-1 Win in Game Two in Wooster's Split with Denison

Freshman Bridget Serrurier upped her RBI total to a team-best 22 with her go-ahead single in the sixth inning.

WOOSTER, Ohio – Freshman Bridget Serrurier drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and sophomore Maddy Chase struck out three in the top of the seventh as The College of Wooster softball team bounced back to take the nightcap 2-1 after dropping a 5-3 contest to visiting Denison University on Wednesday afternoon at Galpin Park.

Kasey Fiedler started the rally in the nightcap for Wooster (15-15, 6-4 North Coast Athletic Conference) with a leadoff single in the sixth inning. Denison's (18-12, 7-3 NCAC) Ryan Lee nearly made a gold glove play of her own with a diving stop and throw from her knees, but Fielder easily beat out the throw.

Later in the inning, the Scots caught a break when Chase beat out a throwing error to extend the inning, prior to Serrurier punching the go-ahead single through the left side of the field to bring in Fiedler.

Then, in the seventh, Chase recorded half of her six strikeouts on the afternoon. The Big Red made things interesting with a one-out single, a runner Chase stranded at first. Chase really had to battle back against the last two batters of the game who worked their respective counts to 3-1 and 2-1 prior to the right-hander battling back for the strikeouts.

Denison scored first in the nightcap with Kerry Hager drilling a two-out double into the left-center gap in the third inning.

Wooster answered right back in the home half of the frame. Taylor Raybuck started things off legging out an infield single and moving into scoring position on a wild pitch. Then, Serrurier moved the Scots' table-setter over to third on a well-place single down the right-field line. Jenna Kendall followed knocking in Raybuck, tying the score at one.

Wooster's heart of the order led the way in the nightcap with Kendall (3), Little (2), and Serrurier (2) combining for seven of the Scots' 10 hits.

Chase picked up her 11th win of the year in the circle, allowing one run on six hits.

In the first game of the twin bill, Denison used a pair of big hits to open up a 5-0 lead. First, in the second inning, Laura Bagan punched a gap-finding two-run double to the fence in left center. Then, in the third inning, Lauren Secaras delivered a three-run home run to center.

Wooster struck for all three of its runs in the fourth inning. First, Raybuck drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Chelsea Copley who walked earlier in the inning. Then, Chase poked a two-run single to center to drive in Jamie Kenyon and Linea Brouse.

Denison's defense really came through in the fourth despite Wooster pushing across three runs. The Big Red faced a bases-loaded situation with nobody out, and threw out a Scot runner at home on a fielder's choice.

Serrurier led the way at the plate with a two-hit game.

Kendall, who fired a complete game, allowed five runs on six hits. Notable, the junior did not allow a hit past the third inning, with the only Big Red runner reaching on a Wooster error.

Notable, Raybuck's first-inning walk in the nightcap marked the senior's single-season school record 23rd of the year, surpassing Kelley Johnson who had 22 during the 2010 season.

Wooster remains at home for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against first-place DePauw University (19-12, 10-0 NCAC) on Saturday.
