Scots Unable to Capitalize on Late-Inning Chances as Wooster Swept by NCAC Leader DePauw

 Jamie Kenyon

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster softball team had big offensive chances late in both games, and held North Coast Athletic Conference leader DePauw University to one hit between the first three innings of both contests, but the late-game chances did not translate into runs as the Tigers remained undefeated in conference play with a 5-2, 2-0 sweep on Saturday afternoon at Galpin Park.

Wooster (15-17, 6-6 NCAC) struck first in game one, as the Fighting Scots pushed a run across in the second inning. Chelsea Copley started the rally with a one-out walk, and two batters later, Kasey Fiedler sent a roller up the middle to move Copley to third. Then, Jamie Kenyon poked a single over DePauw's shortstop to plate Copley.

DePauw (21-12, 12-0 NCAC) claimed its first lead of the day in the fourth inning with a pair of runs to make it a 2-1 contest. The Tigers added a pair in the fifth and an insurance tally in the seventh.

Wooster really made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, as the Fighting Scots had the go-ahead run at the plate. Kenyon jump-started the threat, legging out a double that moved Linea Brouse, who singled to start the inning, to third. Taylor Raybuck drew a two-out walk to load the bases, and was followed by Chase, who reached on a fielder's choice with Brouse coming in on the play. Kenyon's speed on the bases came into play again as the sophomore beat out the Tigers' throw to third that would have ended the game on a force play.

Notable, Fiedler mowed down three would-be base stealers in the contest.

Chase (11-7) took the loss in the circle allowing five runs on 11 hits in the complete game.

Jenna Kendall really kept Wooster in the thick of things in the second game. The junior, who did not allow a hit over the final four innings in her Wednesday outing against Denison University, upped her hitless streak to 7.2 innings before Sammi Bell led off the fourth inning with a single to left field.

In fact, DePauw scored both of its runs on a two-run single from Lauren Gooden in the fourth inning.

Wooster's best chance offensively came in the sixth inning when Raybuck led off the frame with a walk. Then, Bridget Serrurier reached on an infield single, and later, Raybuck advanced to third when DePauw's catcher threw down to first in an attempt to pick off Serrurier, but the Tigers' Emma Baldwin worked out of the jam.

For the game, Kendall (4-10) allowed seven hits – all singles – while striking out three.

Brouse and Kenyon led the way at the plate with two hits each, while Raybuck upped her single-season walks record to 26.

Next, Wooster travels to Wittenberg University (23-6-1, 7-3 NCAC).
