Wooster Dealt Pair of Heartbreaking One-Run Setbacks at Rival Wittenberg

 Bridget Serrurier

The College of Wooster softball team struck first in both contests, but a pair of triples by Wittenberg University spoiled a pair of stellar pitching performances by the Fighting Scots, and resulted in 2-1 and 3-2 heartbreaking setbacks on Thursday afternoon at Springfield, Ohio.

Taylor Raybuck jump-started Wooster's (15-19, 6-8 North Coast Athletic Conference) offense in the top of the first. Raybuck, who entered the week sixth in Div. III in walks per game, drew her 27th base on balls to start the contest. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Maddy Chase, and Scots' left fielder came in on an opposite-field single off the bat of Bridget Serrurier.

Wittenberg (27-6-1, 11-3 NCAC) did its damage in the third when Shannon Lance drilled a two-out RBI triple to right, and then came in to score on a Wooster error.

Chase took the hard-luck loss in the circle to fall to 11-8 on the year. The sophomore yielded as many hits (four) as she had strikeouts in the contest. Notable, the start marked the right-hander's fifth of the year allowing four hits or fewer.

In the nightcap, Wooster strung together another impressive start to the contest. Raybuck led off the tilt with a double down the left field line, and then two batters later, came in to score on a Serrurier double to center.

Wittenberg plated the tying run in the home half of the first via a two-out single.

Wooster reclaimed the lead at 2-1 in the third stanza. This time the Scots did their damage with two outs with Chase reaching via a hit by pitch. Serrurier followed with her third double of the afternoon, with Chase coming in to score on the play via a Tiger error.

In the bottom of the sixth, Katy Baumgartner delivered the go-ahead knock for Wittenberg with a two-run triple.

Jenna Kendall fell to 4-11 on the campaign allowing six hits in the circle.

Of note, Chase and Kendall combined to hold the Tigers to 10 hits on the afternoon.

Serrurier led the way at the plate with four of Wooster's seven hits on the afternoon.

Wittenberg was paced by Abby Hab and Chelsea Zang who helped the Tigers lower their conference-best ERA to 2.25. Other notable afternoons were turned in by Baumgartner and Casey Hobbs who each had three hits.

Next, Wooster travels to Heidelberg University (22-10) for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference tilt on Friday.
