Offense Falls Short in NCAC Opener to DePauw as Scots Limit Tigers to Six Total Runs

Bridget Serrurier

The College of Wooster softball team dropped a closely fought doubleheader to DePauw University, losing both decisions by a combined three runs in the team's first taste of North Coast Athletic Conference competition this season as Wooster opened league play on Saturday afternoon at Greencastle, Ind.

In game one, junior Maddy Chase pitched six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out two.

The Fighting Scots (8-12) opened the game's scoring with two runs in the top of the second inning. Senior Linea Brouse opened with a double to left field before scoring on a single up the middle from sophomore Bridget Serrurier, who went 2-for-2 on the game. After a sacrifice bunt from senior Jenna Kendall advanced Serrurier to second, first-year Taryn Kohlman brought home the sophomore with a single to right center.

DePauw (5-13) manufactured three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, however, as Sidney Holler crossed home on a sacrifice fly, followed by Abbey Bass, who stole home after initially reaching on a bunt single. Liz Getz scored the game-winning run as she also reached on a bunt single and advanced two more bags after stealing second and reaching third on the throw. On the ensuing at-bat, Getz was brought in with a single to center.

In game two, Kendall received the start, going an identical six innings of three-run ball to accompany two strikeouts.

Again, the Scots took the early lead, this time in the top of the first inning, as Chase hit a leadoff double to left center, then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Chelsea Copley before crossing home plate on a RBI single from first-year Marina Roski.

In the bottom of the second, after Getz hit in the game-tying run on a single down the left field line, Bass scored the game-winning run on the ensuing bat while Getz was caught in a run-down situation. DePauw tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as Getz reached on a bunt single before stealing second and coming home on a RBI single.

The Scots are back in action tomorrow, April 2 as they take on Franklin College (11-7) in a doubleheader starting at noon.
