Scots Open Divisional Play Splitting with Hiram

Heidi Likins
Heidi Likins collected three hits and three RBI on Saturday.

One run decided both softball games on Saturday as The College of Wooster split with Hiram to open NCAC East play. The Scots fell in nine innings in game one, 5-4, but responded with a 9-8 win in game two.

In game one, Wooster struck early as the Likins sisters - Molly and Heidi - each collected an RBI in the top of the first. Heidi Likins extended the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single in the third.

First-year Stephanie Griffin tripled in a run in the top of the sixth but Hiram answered with four runs to tie the game up in the bottom of the inning. The game went all the way to the ninth and concluded on a walk-off RBI double from Mariah Sheffield.

In game two, Wooster only had two extra base hits among its 16 hits and still managed nine runs. It was single after single that led them to three runs in the third and another three in the fourth.

Gabby Lakes, Heidi Likins, Anna Norby, Katie Agatucci and Griffin all had RBI singles. Later in the fifth, Rachel Ginsburg crossed home plate on a wild pitch, and Brooke Swain had her own RBI single.

Then in the sixth, Norby scored on a fielding error that wound up being important with Hiram scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-8.

Marissa Norgrove was credited with the win in game two. She went four innings and struck out three.

Swain finished the day 5-for-10 with four runs scored and an RBI. Heidi Likins went 3-for-6 with three RBI. In game two, Griffin collected three hits and an RBI.

The Scots are now 6-4 and 1-1 in NCAC play, while Hiram is 6-9 and 1-1. The two teams meet again Sunday in Wooster.
