Five Earn All-NCAC Honors, Griffin Named Newcomer of the Year

Wooster collected five spots on the All-NCAC East Team on Tuesday.

The College of Wooster softball team had five representatives make the 2021 All-NCAC East Team, while first-year Stephanie Griffin was named North Coast Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year.

Joining Griffin on the All-NCAC East Team were juniors Molly Likins and Brooke Swain and seniors Emmalee Cooke and Olivia Johnson.

Griffin batted .525 (21-for-40) in 12 East games which was second in the entire NCAC and topped the league with a .568 on base percentage. On the year she finished with a .367 average with two home runs and 17 RBI.

Griffin is the third Wooster player to win the Newcomer of the Year honor and the first since 2012 (Demi Hart).

The only person to top Griffin in batting average in NCAC games was the leadoff hitter Swain, who hit .531 (26-for-49). Swain also led the conference with 13 stolen bases, swiping six more than the next best player.

Swain's .549 on base percentage was a slot below Griffin as well. Overall, she finished the year with a .400 batting average with three doubles, 12 RBI and team-highs and single season program records in runs (36) and stolen bases (29).

Likins brought the power this year leading the conference with eight home runs, and a league leading four in conference games. Her eight home runs, 36 runs scored and .718 slugging percentage were all single season program records.

She was seventh in conference games with a .435 batting average (20-for-46) and tied for third with 15 RBI.

Overall, she finished with a .418 batting average with 8 home runs, 29 RBI and seven doubles. She was a first team selection in 2019.

Cooke batted .342 (13-for-38) in conference games and was seventh with 14 RBI. She did not commit an error in 10 conference games and caught three runners stealing.

On the year, Cooke batted .381 with four home runs, 26 RBI and 25 runs scored. She hit a team-high 12 doubles, which was fourth among conference leaders.

Cooke was an honorable mention in 2019.

Johnson went 4-1 with three complete games and a 1.57 ERA in seven conference games. Her ERA was fourth best in the conference.

She expanded that to an 11-6 record with a 1.78 ERA and 126 strikeouts in 20 appearances on the year. Her 106 innings logged were second among conference players.

Johnson was a first-team member in 2019. Also of note, her career winning percentage of .600 is a program best.

Wooster set a number of team records this year in way of a 22-10 overall record and 9-3 NCAC East record. Among the records broken were batting average (.357), home runs (30), RBI (206) and winning percentage (.688).
