Scots Drop Two to 21st-Ranked Lions

Kaydee Clark CINCINNATI – The College of Wooster softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against 21st-ranked Mount St. Joseph University on Friday, 10-2 (5 inn.) and 5-3.

In game one, sophomore Kaydee Clark gave Wooster its only offense with a two-run home run down the left field line. In her second at bat, she hit the ball to the warning track in center field falling just shy of a two home run game.

Defensively, Clark also threw out a runner behind the plate.

Brooke Swain led the game off with a single, and later Anna Norby reached on a base hit as Wooster finished with just three hits.

Sophomore Rachael Dudziak lasted just two-thirds of an inning and took the loss as Mount St. Joseph tallied six quick runs in the first. Junior Addie Tagg pitched the remaining 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs.

In game two, sophomore Stephanie Griffin-Sanchez hit a two-out home run over the left-center field wall to put Wooster ahead 1-0 in the top of the first.

The Scots tallied two more in the second with two outs on an RBI single to second base from Ciara Herbert. An errant throw to first allowed the second run to score as Wooster led 3-0.

Unfortunately, the Lions got all three runs back in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run and later a sacrifice fly. Mount St. Joseph took the lead in the third off a one-out single and scored again in the fourth.

Dudziak got the start after her quick outing in game one. She gave up four runs, two earned, in 2.1 innings for the loss. Daphne Pate pitched 3.2 innings in relief and gave up just one unearned run while striking out two.

Wooster had six hits in the game. Herbert led the squad going 2-for-4.

Wooster is now 7-7. Mount St. Joseph improves to 14-5.

Wooster is back in action Saturday with a doubleheader at Transylvania University (9-7).
