Scots Wrap Up NCAC Play, Split with Oberlin

Sarah Lodge The College of Wooster softball team concluded its North Coast Athletic Conference regular season schedule on Tuesday by splitting with Oberlin College. Wooster took game one in five innings 11-3, and failed to complete the comeback in game two, falling 8-6.

In game one, Wooster blew open a 5-3 game with a six-run bottom of the fifth that ended the game.

Wooster capitalized on five errors from the Oberlin defense as Oberlin starting pitcher Katie Austin was tagged for 11 runs, but only one was earned.

In that fifth inning, first-year Destany Blake got Wooster going with an RBI on a ball hit in the infield. Anna Norby tallied an RBI single, and first-year Sarah Lodge promptly cleared the bases with a triple, scoring three runs.

Finally, Stephanie Griffin-Sanchez grounded out to first for Lodge to score and the game to end.

Junior starter Addie Tagg surely appreciated the run support as she moved to 6-5 on the year, allowing just three earned runs and striking out one.

Blake finished with two RBI. Brooke Swain and Kaydee Clark each collected a pair of hits and an RBI apiece.

In game two, Wooster trailed 3-2 entering the sixth but then got hit hard in the top of the frame as Oberlin plated five runs.

Starter Abby Eberly's day was done before the frame. She pitched 4.2 innings and gave up three runs but only one was earned.

Senior Daphne Pate started the sixth but could not retire any of the four batters she faced. Sophomore Rachael Dudziak came in and gave up three straight hits before collecting a double play and striking out the final batter.

Tagg came in to pitch a clean seventh.

Wooster tried to rally with two runs in the sixth. Molly Likins homered to right field, and later Katie Agatucci scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

Wooster scored two more in the seventh with two outs as Lodge doubled to bring home Norby and Ciara Herbert brought home Lodge with a single to right center. Griffin-Sanchez then got a bit unlucky as she shot a ball up the middle, but it deflected off the pitcher's glove right to second base for the easy force out.

Herbert, Griffin-Sanchez, Likins, Clark and Lilly McLendon all had two hits in game two. Likins finished 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBI and two walks.

Wooster (16-8) finishes right at .500 in NCAC play at 8-8. They will await the conclusion of the season to see if they earn a seeding in the NCAC Tournament.

Until then, the Scots travel for two more non-conference matchups, starting with Ohio Northern University on Thursday.
