LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The College of Wooster softball team opened its season Sunday against Transylvania University with a pair of losses, 12-4 in five innings and 4-2.
In game one, Wooster scored four runs in the second but were immediately with a four-run inning from the Pioneers.
Transylvania, who won the HCAC and went to the NCAA Tournament last season, exploded with a seven-run fourth inning to put the game away.
Wooster spread across six hits including two from junior Cate Barkdoll. Emma Hetkey and Sarah Lodge each had a hit and an RBI.
In game two, junior Julia Jennings hit a double in the third to tie the game at 1-1 only for Transylvania (2-0) to again answer in the bottom half.
Another two runs in the bottom of the fourth was enough to seal the win for the Pioneers.
Jennings, Hetkey and Lynx Lander each had a pair of hits in game two.
First-year Jillian Meszaros got her first appearance on the mound, pitching the complete game and allowing just three earned runs.
Wooster returns to the field next Sunday with a trip to Spalding University.
