Bats Wake Up To Salvage Split
Mommers leads offense in game two, falling home run short of cycle
COLUMBUS – The College of Wooster softball team came alive offensively in game two of its doubleheader at Capital University on Tuesday, splitting with the Comets in a 2-0 loss and a 14-3 win in six innings.
Both games featured solid pitching performances from the Scots, but missed opportunities was the story in game one as Wooster left seven runners on base.
Notably, they failed to score after their first two hitters reached. They left another two stranded in the second, runners on second and third in the fifth and the lead off hitter in the sixth.
Meanwhile, Capital got its first three hitters on and went up 2-0 after the first inning.
Both runs were unearned behind Wooster's only two errors of the game.
First-year Jillian Meszaros took the loss in the complete game but pitched another quality start, lowering her ERA to 1.17.
While Wooster left seven runners on, Capital left eight. Mesazaros worked out of a few jams, including the bottom of the fourth, leaving runners on second and third.
Juniors Emma Hetkey finished 2-for-3, Cate Barkdoll went 1-for-2 and Ella Wolff went 1-for-3.
Those game one frustrations were taken out immediately to open game two as the Scots brought across six runs and chased Capital's starting pitcher out after recording just one out.
After Meszaros led the game off with a double, the Scots loaded the bases after an out and two walks later.
First-year Lynx Lander singled to bring home the game's first run, before junior Katie Mommers made it a 3-0 game with a single down the left field line.
Sophomore Shelby Ellsworth then broke the game open with her first collegiate home run, sending it over the left-center field fence and giving Wooster a 6-0 lead.
Capital (2-2) got one back in the bottom of the inning, but Wooster kept the pressure on with a 3-run second.
Meszaros again started things off, this time with a single, and was eventually brought home on a Barkdoll single. Mommers later sent a ball over the right fielrd's head, resulting in a two-run triple.
Mommers was responsible for Wooster's other run in the fourth, driving home Barkdoll. Mommers had her best offensive showing to date and was a home run shy of the cycle, finishing 4-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored.
Wooster then capped things off with a four-run sixth.
Sophomore Tori Conner pitched well for the win, going five innings and allowing just one earned run. Junior Lynnsey Delio saw her first action on the mound as well, pitching the final frame and escaping a bases loaded, nobody out situation.
Wooster scattered across 15 hits in the game. Meszaros and Hetkey each finished 3-for-5, while Barkdoll hit 2-for-3.
Wooster moves to 2-4 through six games, and they will next embark on their Florida spring break trip, playing eight games next week starting Sunday.
