The College of Wooster softball team is through four of their eight games during their Florida spring break trip. After some tough competition to start, Wooster battled back for two wins on Tuesday. Below is a recap of each game. The Scots play next with two games on Thursday and conclude with two games on Saturday.
Sunday, March 16
Rowan 10, Wooster 0 (5 inn.)
Wooster opened their spring trip with their toughest opponent on the schedule in fourth-ranked Rowan University.
After a scoreless first, Rowan scored three in the second and six in the third. Rowan collected 14 hits in the game and also was aided with four Wooster errors.
First-year Jillian Meszaros took the loss after being lifted in the third. She struck out five and gave up eight runs but only five were earned.
Classmate Kaitlyn Hale pitched well in the final three frames, allowing just one earned run.
Wooster collected four hits, one each from Meszaros, Julia Jennings, Cate Barkdoll and Lynx Lander.
Rowan improved to 13-0 following the win. In their first 13 games, their pitchers have only allowed five runs.
Wisconsin-La Crosse 6, Wooster 1
Wooster got on the board first but could not muster any more runs in a 6-1 loss to Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Meszaros doubled to lead off the game and would later come around to score on a ground out from Jennings.
Wisconsin-La Crosse scored two in the bottom of the inning and kept that lead the rest of the way.
Sophomore starter Tori Conner pitched 4.2 innings and gave up five earned runs. She was relieved following a two-run home run from Maddy Bornbach in the fifth.
Meszaros did not allow a hit in 1.1 innings of relief. She also finished 2-for-4 at the plate with the Scots' only extra base hit.
Conner went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Emma Hetkey and Shelby Ellsworth each collected a hit as well.
Tuesday, March 18
Wooster 6, Hope 2
Wooster picked up its first win by jumping on Hope's pitching quick, taking a 5-0 lead after three innings.
Barkdoll made it 3-0 with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the first. Barkdoll homered over the right field fence, scoring Meszaros and Hetkey.
Barkdoll also hit a run-scoring double in the sixth, going 2-for-3 with a home run, double and three RBI in the game.
Meszaros had another good outing on the mound, pitching the complete game and striking out two. The only runs to come across were in the seventh with the game about put away.
Meszaros also was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Hetkey was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
Wooster 4, Brockport 1
Conner led Wooster to the Tuesday sweep after pitching a dominating complete game, allowing no earned runs through seven innings. She allowed just six hits and struck out two as the only run to score happened following an error at second base in the fifth.
Barkdoll went yard again and was the only Scot to collect a multi-hit game going 2-for-3.
After a 1-2-3 first inning, Barkdoll homered to lead off the second.
Wooster then plated two in the third off a Jennings single. Finally, Conner helped herself out in the seventh with a RBI double to left-center.
Wooster put together eight hits to improve to 4-6 after Tuesday's games.
