The College of Wooster softball team suffered a tough sweep in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday, falling to DePauw University, 9-5 and 6-0.
Junior Cate Barkdoll was the main source of offense for the Scots in game one, who collected five runs on four hits. Barkdoll went 2-for-2 with a home run, a double and three RBI. She also drew a walk.
Barkdoll gave Wooster an early 1-0 lead, scoring Jillian Meszaros on an RBI double. In the sixth, she belted a two-run home run to bring Wooster within one run at 6-5.
Unfortunately, attempts of a comeback were thwarted when DePauw scored three runs in the top of the seventh. DePauw started the inning with four straight hits to chase reliever Kaitlyn Hale out as the Tigers took the game 9-5 after a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh.
The first-year starter Meszaros took the loss, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing four earned runs.
DePauw's Riley Depa got the win, while Izzy Deveau achieved the two-inning save.
In game two, Deveau got the start and continued to blank the Scots, throwing the complete game and only allowing three hits. Meszaros, Emma Hetkey and Ella Wolff were the only three to record hits, while Julia Jennings and Sarah Lodge each drew a walk.
Sophomore Tori Conner pitched 4.2 innings in the loss. She gave up five earned runs as DePauw spread across its scoring.
The Tigers scored two runs in the first and scored a run in each inning aside from the third and seventh. Meszaros pitched the final 2.1 innings in relief, allowing one run.
DePauw (12-10) stays undefeated within the NCAC at 4-0, while Wooster (7-17) is still looking for their first conference win.
Wooster gets back on the diamond on Sunday with a doubleheader versus the University of Mount Union. They will also celebrate senior day with their lone senior in Lodge.
