Scots' Weekend Successful With Dual Wins Over Hiram, OWU

The College of Wooster swimming and diving teams returned from their holiday break in style, cruising to two dual victories this weekend. The Fighting Scot men defeated Hiram on Friday by a 161-73 margin, while the women were victorious by a score of 144-83. On Saturday, the Wooster men downed Ohio Wesleyan in Timken Natatorium by a 147-67 count and the Scot women coasted to a 146-79 victory. The victories improved the men to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference action, while the women moved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in NCAC competition.

Eric Babbitt and Dustin Klein paced the Wooster men with three individual victories over the two meets. On Friday, Babbitt won the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.24, and followed that performance up against the Bishops with two more first-place finishes, first in the 200 freestyle (1:50.45) and later in the 200 butterfly (2:06.61). In the three men’s diving events that were contested, Klein was victorious in each one winning the one-meter (176.25) and three-meter (168.80) against the Terriers, and the one-meter (173.00) boards against Ohio Wesleyan.

Logan LaBerge took home two individual wins, while Andrew Olsen, Ryan Radtke, and Brendan Horgan each added a victory competing in their respective specialties over the weekend. LaBerge won both the 100 back on Friday (1:02.13) and 200 back on Saturday (2:03.52), Olsen stopped the clock first in the 100 breaststroke Friday (1:10.88), Radtke touched the wall first Friday in the 400 freestyle (4:24.69), and Horgan was the top finisher Saturday in the 100 freestyle (49.01).

In addition, Wooster won both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. LaBerge, Olsen, Horgan and Michael Saltzman captured first in the medley with a time of 1:52.47, while the quartet of Babbitt, Horgan, Saltzman and Radtke lapped the field in the freestyle in 1:38.21.

On the women’s side, Wooster’s Amanda Bailey dominated the distance freestyle events by accumulating four victories. On Friday, she raced to wins in the 800 (10:01.55) and 400 (4:50.23), and during action Saturday, she added victories in the 1000 (11:23.78) and the 500 (5:31.60).

Showing their depth, Meggie Edwards, Syd Kelly, Tamari Farquharson, May Tobar, Alice Case and Caitlin McNulty each added a pair of wins to their resumes. Edwards swam the top time on Friday in the 100 free (1:03.36) and the 200 back on Saturday (2:17.62), while Kelly raced to first-place finishes in the 200 individual medley Friday (2:38.05) and the 400 individual medley Saturday (4:58.54). Farquharson finished first in both the 50 freestyle (28.88) and the 100 breast (1:20.71) against Hiram, while Tobar wound up first in the 100 back Friday (1:10.85) and the 100 free Saturday (56.86). Case paced the field in the 200 free (2:03.79) and 200 fly (2:18.47) Saturday, while McNulty dove to two top finishes Friday in the one-meter (195.85) and the three-meter (212.90) boards.

Other winners for the women included Allie Kibler-Campbell in the 50 freestyle (26.13) on Friday, and diver Julie Pinzur on the 1-meter board (189.45) during Saturday’s dual meet.

Also of note, Wooster’s women were victorious in three of the four relay events contested during the weekend. Edwards, Kelly, Sam Spencer, and Milena Mauric finished first in the 200 medley relay Friday (2:10.02), while Farquharson, Tobar, Case and Kibler-Campbell raced home first in the 200 free relay (1:57.27). On Saturday, Edwards, Kelly, Kibler-Campbell and Tobar touched the wall first in the 200 medley relay (1:54.56).

The Scots are off for two weeks before being back in action on January 26, when they host Wheeling Jesuit University in a 1:00 p.m. meet.
