The College of Wooster swimmers and divers were too much for
North Coast Athletic Conference foes Hiram College and Ohio
Wesleyan University this weekend, as the Fighting Scots easily
swept a dual meet from each opponent.
After posting 164-67 (men) and 157-66 (women) victories over Hiram
in their final scheduled home competition of the 2008-09 season on
Friday night, the Fighting Scots were slated to travel to central
Ohio Saturday afternoon. Poor weather conditions canceled those
plans, however, the meet between Wooster and Ohio Wesleyan was
still conducted, albeit at two different sites. It turned into a
"telephone meet," as each team competed in its own pool and the two
sets of results were then combined and computed as if it was a
regular dual. When all was said and done, the Scots came out on top
164-67 (men) and 146-85 (women).
In men's action, Eric Babbitt paced Wooster with four individual
wins over the weekend. Against Hiram, he headed the field in the 50
freestyle (22.06) as well as the 100 free (49.16) and then produced
top times Saturday afternoon in the 200 free (1:50.97) and 200
butterfly (2:01.88). Equally impressive was Ryan Radtke as he
turned in three victories - the 1000 free (10:28.88) and 500 free
(5:02.31) Friday evening and the 400 individual medley (4:30.12)
versus Ohio Wesleyan.
Additional multi-event winners for the Scots in the pool were Logan
LaBerge and Adel El-Adawy. LaBerge took top honors in the 200 free
(1:51.07) in the Hiram meet and in the 200 backstroke (1:58.98)
during the "telephone dual," while El-Adawy was first in the 100
back (55.58) Friday and in the 500 free (5:11.77) Saturday. Also
noteworthy, Wooster diver Luke Knezevic swept the weekend's diving
events, highlighted by scores of 295.20 during Saturdayís
one-meter and 245.85 over Fridayís three-meter
competition.
The Haug triplets highlighted Wooster's women's results, as they
combined for eight individual wins. Priscilla Haug accounted for
four of them herself, earning first-place finishes in the 200 free
(2:02.12) and 500 free (5:27.39) during Friday's traditional dual
against Hiram and in the 400 IM (4:53.25) and the 200 back
(2:20.95) versus Ohio Wesleyan in the "telephone meet." Melissa
Haug was a triple winner, emerging ahead of the pack in the 200 IM
(2:18.35) and 100 breaststroke (1:13.09) on Friday and in the 200
free (2:06.40) Saturday, while Rebecca Haug won the 100 fly
(1:02.87) against Hiram as well as the 200 breast (2:42.10).
The other double winner during the weekend was Meggie Edwards, who
touched first in the 50 free (25.73) and 100 back (1:03.66) Friday
evening.
The Scots will not compete again until a trip to Wheeling Jesuit
University on Jan. 24 for a dual.
