Scot Women Cruise Past Polar Bears 170-124; Men Fall 166-128

The College of Wooster swimming & diving teams were back in the water Saturday afternoon inside Timken Natatorium against non-conference foe Ohio Northern University, with the Fighting Scot women easily handling the Polar Bears in a 170-124 victory, while the Scot men were edged by a 166-128 score. The victory improves the Scot women to 2-1 in dual meet action this season, while the men fall to 1-2 overall.

On the women’s side, Alice Case, Melissa Haug, and Molly Bittner were a part of two individual event victories. Case touched first in the 100 fly (1:02.49), and captured the 200 freestyle in 2:03.44. Melissa Haug beat the field to the wall in the 200 butterfly (2:19.18) and the 200 breaststroke (2:35.20). Bittner was victorious in both the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle, stopping the clock with times of 25.86 and 55.99, respectively.

Also earning top finishes for the Fighting Scots were Meggie Edwards, who won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.04, Priscilla Haug in the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:18.31, and Rebecca Haug in the 400 individual medley in 5:00.30.

In addition, both Scot relay teams placed first, with the 400 medley team of Priscilla Haug, Melissa Haug, Case and Bittner clocking in at 4:12.84, while the 400 freestyle relay team of Edwards, Bittner, Tobar and Case touched first with a time of 3:47.44.

Leading the Wooster men with three individual wins was Eric Babbitt, while Logan LaBerge touched the wall first in two events. Babbitt swept the sprint freestyle events, sprinting to a win in the 50 freestyle (22.12), beating the competition to the wall in the 100 freestyle (48.82), and nipping the field in the 200 freestyle (1:46.74). LaBerge swam to a first-place showing in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.61, while touching first in the 200 backstroke, clocking in at 2:00.34, the ninth-fastest time in school history. Also notching individual event wins for the Scots were Andrew Olsen in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.48), and Brendan Horgan in the 100 butterfly (55.87).

Wooster also picked up a relay event victory, as the quartet of LaBerge, Olsen, Horgan and Ryan Radtke edged the competition in the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:42.44.

The Scots are back in action next Friday and Saturday, when they take part in the Veale Classic. Wooster squares off against John Carroll University at 5 p.m. on Friday, while Case Western Reserve University and Oberlin College will compete at 7 p.m. The consolation meet will take place on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m., and the championship match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
