The College of Wooster women’s swimming and diving team
won the second edition of the Veale Classic, besting Case Western
Reserve University 132-105 in Saturday’s championship meet,
while the host Spartans turned the table in the men’s
competition, as they knocked off the Fighting Scots 161-76. On
Friday, both Wooster teams easily advanced to the championship by
defeating another northeast Ohio school, John Carroll University,
by tallies of 138-64 (women) and 162-75 (men).
The Scot women, who now hold a 4-1 dual-meet record, kicked off
Saturday’s action with a key victory, as the 400 medley relay
team of Meggie Edwards, Syd Kelly, Melissa Haug, and Molly Bittner
beat Case’s top foursome by less than a second (4:10.86 to
4:11.63). The meet remained close, with Wooster’s Sarah
Rudawsky, Tamari Farquharson, and Melissa Haug finishing first in
the 1000 freestyle (11:11.37), the 50 freestyle (25.69), and the
200 individual medley, respectively, to counter individual wins by
the Spartans in the 200 freestyle and the one-meter diving
event.
Wooster increased its lead by picking up three consecutive
individual event victories. Alice Case touched the wall first in
the 200 butterfly (2:20.75), Bittner led the field to the wall in
the 100 freestyle (55.60), and Priscilla Haug was victorious in the
200 backstroke (2:16.70). The Spartans took the next three events,
but the foursome of Case, Bittner, May Tobar, and Farquharson
sealed the victory in the 400 freestyle relay (3:48.05).
During the men’s championship meet, Case jumped out to an
lead with victories in the first five events before Scot diver Luke
Knezevic’s one-meter victory (423.70) notched Wooster’s
first event win. Eric Babbitt and Logan LaBerge drew Wooster closer
as they stopped the clock first in two of the next three events.
Babbitt posted the best time in the 200 butterfly (2:00.39), and
LaBerge was first in the 200 backstroke (2:00.10).
Knezevic added his second win besting the competitors in the
three-meter diving competition (372.65), but Case proved to be too
deep taking four of the final events with Knezevic’s win
serving as the lone victory during that stretch for Wooster, which
slipped to 2-3 on the season.
The women’s rout of John Carroll showcased Wooster’s
depth as not one swimmer picked up more than one individual
victory. Event wins came from Kristine Mann in the 1650 freestyle
(19:11.91), Bittner in the 200 freestyle (2:02.29), Farquharson in
the 50 freestyle (25.61), Priscilla Haug in the 400 individual
medley (4:52.21), Melissa Haug in the 100 butterfly (1:01.22),
Edwards in the 100 free (56.04), Tobar in the 100 backstroke
(1:03.34), and Case in the 500 freestyle (5:30.24).
The men’s win over the Blue Streaks saw the Scots’ pick
up individual wins from Ryan Radtke in the 1650 freestyle
(18:28.47), LaBerge in the 200 freestyle (1:50.69) and 500
freestyle (5:08.84), Babbitt in the 50 free (22.20) and 100
butterfly (54.10), Adel El-Adawy in 400 individual medley
(4:33.59), Brett Dawson in the 100 backstroke (59.18), Tyler
Hartley-Shepherd in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.55) and Knezevic in
both the one-meter (255.00) and three-meter diving events
(242.35).
The Scots go back to regular dual action next Saturday when they
play host Westminster (Pa.) College at 1 p.m. inside Timken
Natatorium.
