Swimming and Diving Teams Get Dual-Meet Action Underway

Caroline Hanson The College of Wooster's men's and women's swimming and diving teams both had solid weekends in its first dual-meet action of the season, as the men posted a 172-94 win over Mt. Union College on Friday, then lost 165-135 on Saturday in a close meet with rival Wittenberg University, and the women swam past both the Purple Raiders and the Tigers by scores of 148-118 and 152-148, respectively.

First-year swimmers Clare Walsh and Caroline Hanson recorded several impressive individual wins on the women's side. Walsh won both the 50 and 100 freestyle against Mt. Union in 25:62 and 56:15, while Hanson recorded wins on Friday in the 100 breast stroke (1:08.96) and 500 freestyle (5:26.35), and then placed first in the 1000 freestyle (11:11.89) in the victory over Wittenberg.

On the men's side, senior Logan LaBerge raced to several wins this weekend, including three against the Tigers which came in the 100 back (55:48), 200 back (1:59.78), and 200 IM (2:03.90). Fellow classmate Eric Babbitt also was a regular scorer in both meets, earning wins in the 200 butterfly (2:01.52) and 500 freestyle (4:57.68) on Friday, and then taking top honors in the 100 freestyle (50:25) and 100 butterfly (53.84) on Saturday.

Also winning in multiple events were sisters Melissa and Priscilla Haugh, and men's senior Ryan Radtke. Melissa took the 200 freestyle (2:02.81) on Friday and the 200 butterfly (2:15.32) on Saturday, while Priscilla won both the 100 (1:02.70) and 200 backstroke (2:15.32) against Mt. Union. Radtke did his damage against the Purple Raiders as well, nabbing the top spot in the 100 breast stroke (1:01.63) and 100 freestyle (49.18).

The Scots will travel to Ohio Northern University to swim against the Polar Bears on Saturday at 1 p.m.
