Women Win Veale Classic, While Men Take Second

Kate Hunt The College of Wooster women's swimming and diving team won the Veale Classic this weekend with victories over Oberlin College (108-97) and Case Western Reserve University (160-77), while the men's squad placed second with a 134-68 win over the Yeomen on Friday and a loss to the Spartans (113-126) on Saturday at Cleveland, Ohio.

Freshman Kate Hunt had an impressive weekend for the women's team (5-0), winning two races over Oberlin and two more against the Spartans, while setting two all-time records in the Veale Classic. Her first place times of 53.42 in the 100 freestyle and 1:57.00 in the 200 freestyle on Saturday were the fastest times ever recorded in those races at Case Western Reserve's annual meet. She also won the 50- (25.09) and 500 freestyle (5:15.45) on Friday in the team's narrow win over Oberlin.

Also swimming well on the ladies' side was Melissa Haug, who won the 100 butterfly (1:00.83) on Friday and the 200 butterfly (2:14.60) on Saturday. Caroline Hanson played a big part in the win over the Spartans, taking top honors in the 500- (5:31.50) and 1000 freestyle (11:11.59), while nabbing a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.66) against the Yeowomen.

For the men's swimmers (2-3), senior Ryan Radtke also set an event record by winning the 200 IM in 2:00.87 on Saturday, while also scoring victories in the 1650 freestyle (17:39.32) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.12) the day prior. Logan LaBerge picked up wins in the 200 backstroke (1:58.80) and 500 freestyle (4:59.58) over the weekend, and diver Luke Knezvic shattered the event's one meter diving record (255.00 points) with a score of 274.20 and also won the three meter diving competition (228.30).

The Fighting Scots will be back in action next Saturday when they host Ursuline College at 1 p.m.
