Parisi and Hunt Break School Records During NCAC’s Second Day

Peter Parisi
Sophomore Peter Parisi, shown here in this morning's prelims, broke his own school record in the 100 breaststroke.

The College of Wooster men's and women's swimming and diving teams both had individuals break school records Friday, as Peter Parisi upped his own record in the 100 breaststroke, and Kate Hunt set a new mark in the 100 butterfly, highlighting the Scots' efforts during the second day of the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio.

The men held onto the fourth-place position they earned on day one, and with 489.5 points, they sit just behind third-place Wabash College (493), and nicely ahead of Wittenberg University (432) heading into tomorrow's conclusion. The women needed to make their move today, and they did just that, jumping from sixth to fifth with 554 points, which is only nine points off of fourth-place Wittenberg (563).

Parisi got his big day started early, as he broke his own school record in the 100 breaststroke during this morning's prelims with a time of 58.20. He nearly matched that effort during the championship finals, where he touched in 58.36, which was good for sixth place. Also scoring in the same event were Zach Boylston and Joe Wilch, who took 14th (1:02.08) and 16th (1:02.23) in the consolation heat, respectively.

Then later during the evening session, Parisi excelled once again, this time during the finals of the 100 butterfly, where he earned a fifth-place finish in 51:05. He also was a key contributor in Wooster's 200 medley relay, along with teammates Brett Dawson, Brendan Horgan, and Adel El-Adawy, who all just missed all-conference status with a fourth-place finish in 1:34.63.

Other men competing in consolation heats included Peter Hause and Horgan, who earned respective 13th (53.84) and 14th-place (54:05) finishes in the 100 butterfly. Alex LaJoie was 10th in the 400 IM in 4:16.00, and the 100 backstroke was highlighted by Dawson in 13th (53.30) and El-Adawy 15th (53.35).

The women had their own standouts, with Hunt and Melissa Haug headlining that group. Hunt actually broke Haug's school record (57.58) in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.47, which was good for sixth in the championship finals. Touching just fractions behind her was Haug in 58.03, or seventh place, and both Hunt and Haug reached NCAA "B" cut times to boot.

The two later teamed up alongside Mariah McGovern and Samira El-Adawy to take fourth-place in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:56.44.

McGovern was also another woman to make a championship final, as she placed sixth in the 100 backstroke in 59.56. The Scots racked up some more points in that same event when May Tobar won the consolation heat in 1:00.93, and Clare Walsh and Elizabeth Zucco took 13th (1:02.36) and 14th (1:03.20), respectively.

The consolation finals of the 400 IM featured four Wooster swimmers, led by El-Adawy's 10th-place finish in 4:39.80. Rounding out the group was Priscilla Haug in 11th (4:41.01), Caitlin Murphy 15th (4:56.21), and Sarah Rudawsky 16th (4:56.25).

Also noteworthy, Rebecca Haug touched 13th in the 100 butterfly (59.94), Caroline Hanson was 14th in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.12), and diver Alyse Marquinez was ninth in the three-meter event (266.60).

Denison University remains atop the men's and women's leaderboards with 1,338 and 1,171 points, respectively. The meet will wrap up on Saturday, with the prelims starting at 10 a.m., and the finals at 6:30 p.m.
