Men's Recap

The College of Wooster women's swimmers were one of three groups to record 1,000 points at the 10-team Wooster Invitational, held at Wooster High School's C.T. Branin Natatorium this Thursday through Saturday, and the Fighting Scots secured a third-place finish.

Wooster racked up 1,161 points to sit only behind a pair of NCAA Div. II foes from northwestern Pennsylvania – Edinboro University (1656.5) and Gannon University (1467) – and nearly 200 ahead of fourth-place Case Western Reserve University (988).

Throughout the three-day event, the Scots exhibited their strength in the butterfly events, highlighted by Melissa Haug's individual victory in the 200 with a time of 2:07.67 as she edged teammate and runner-up Kate Hunt by about a second (2:08.63). Haug's effort marked a "B" cut for the NCAA Div. III Championships, as did her second-place time of 57.61 in the 100, and also of note, she was sixth in the 200 IM (2:11.28).

Haug was one of three Wooster representatives in the championship finals (top-eight) of the 100 fly, as Hunt came in fourth (57.89) and Morgan Hughes sixth (59.64). Hunt added another fourth-place during the 500 freestyle (5:14.33), while Hughes contributed two other sixth-place swims, coming in the 50 free (24.84) and the 100 free (54.13).

The trio, along with Clare Walsh, were also part of the Scots' highest finishing relay, as they closed the meet with a third-place performance during the 400 freestyle (3:35.37). Individually, Walsh turned in a 10th-place in the 100 free (54.95) as well as a 16th in the 100 backstroke (1:02.94).

Joining Haug, Hughes, and Hunt with three top-eight appearances were Samira El-Adawy and Mariah McGovern. McGovern was the runner-up in the 500 free (5:10.26), fourth in the grueling 1650 free (18:03.71), and seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:00.42), while El-Adawy earned runner-up status in the 400 IM (4:37.61), fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:08.69), and eighth in the 200 IM (2:12.02).

Haug's twin sisters, Priscilla Haug and Rebecca Haug, also were significant contributors as usual. Priscilla Haug won the consolation heat of the 400 IM for ninth-place overall (4:43.85), to go with 10th- and 11th-place showings in the 200 (2:09.91) and 100 backstrokes (1:00.20), while Rebecca Haug came in 10th in the 200 fly (2:16.39), 12th in the 100 fly (1:01.06), and 13th in the 200 IM (2:15.18).

Wooster also received a nice boost from Colleen Kill, who took 10th in the 400 IM (4:44.32) and 11th in the 200 IM (2:15.02), while Rachel Appleton was the squad's top breaststroker via an 11th in the 100 (1:10.78) and a 16th in the 200 (2:37.07).

Complementing McGovern in the 1650 was Kara Markham with a 13th-place (18:57.36) during that event, and in the 200 fly, Anna Duke and Alyssa Hullings touched the wall 14th (2:17.54) and 15th (2:17.63), respectively. One other top-16 individual performance was courtesy of Caitlyn Murphy in the 400 IM (5:02.35).
