2012 Academic All-District Team

Melissa Haug, who recently graduated from The College of Wooster, was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District Team for at-large sports, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced. The Fighting Scots' standout swimmer was a first-team pick and now moves on to the ballot for Academic All-American® consideration.

Haug completed her standout career in the pool by earning All-American honors in four events this past March. Individually, she finished 16th at the NCAA Div. III Championships in the 200 butterfly (2:05.66), and played a key role on the 400, 200, and 800 freestyle relays that placed eighth, 12th, and 15th, respectively. Haug, who also posted an NCAA "B" cut time in the 200 IM, took fourth in the 200 fly (2:06.47), sixth in the 100 fly (57.02), and eighth in the 200 IM (2:09.45) at the North Coast Athletic Conference meet, giving her eight career championship heat (top-eight) appearances in the best swim conference in Div. III.

Haug, who plans to do a summer research internship at Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine before likely enrolling in med school, compiled a 3.44 grade-point average while majoring in neuroscience with a minor in chemistry. She earned honors on her senior independent study, "Life's Tough, Wear a Helmet: The Lasting Effects of Multiple Concussions on Collegiate Athletes," and also graduated with departmental honors.

Within NCAA Div. III District 7 (Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio), just 11 student-athletes were honored by CoSIDA from the at-large sports (crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, and water polo), and Wooster was one of just two schools with multiple selections (Baldwin-Wallace College was the other).
