The College of Wooster men's swimming and diving team won its portion of Saturday's meet at Oberlin College, 122-120, but the women's squad fell in another close competition, 122-101, and Oberlin prevailed 244-221 overall in the second round of the second annual Greater Cleveland Tournament.

Wooster, which cruised past Baldwin Wallace University during Friday's first round, received strong efforts from a number of swimmers, most notably first-year Conner Gelwicks and junior Brian Maddock on the men's side and senior Kara Markham for the women. They were all double winners, with Maddock, the reigning North Coast Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week, leading the field in the 200 backstroke (2:01.39) and the 400 IM (4:26.11). Gelwicks swept the 200 (1:48.30) and 500 freestyles (5:04.79), and similarly, Markham took the 500 (5:31.10) and 1000 (11:14.61) distance events.

The key to the men's dual victory, though, was the relay events. The Fighting Scots won both, with Maddock, Evan Hagedorn, Zackary Pool, and Aaron Brown starting the meet strong in the 400 medley (3:41.88) and the team of Frayne Poeting, James Love, Avery Wilson, and Gelwicks closing it in style in the 400 freestyle (3:23.46).

Individually, Brown paced the field in the 100 free (50.16), Hagedorn in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.78), and Love in the 200 butterfly (2:07.66).

In addition to Markham's multiple wins on the women's side, teammate Courtney McGovern added one in the 200 free, edging an Oberlin foe by less than two-tenths of a second, 2:00.06 to 2:00.24. Notable, Theresa Spadola scored points as the first-place diver in the one-meter (133.58) and the three-meter (149.70).

The Scots will conclude this year's Greater Cleveland Tournament at John Carroll University next Saturday.
