The College of Wooster's women's swimming and diving team was dominant in its first dual meet of the season, a 165-121 victory over rival Wittenberg University, and sophomore standout Courtney McGovern was a major factor, as she won three individual events prompting the North Coast Athletic Conference to name her Athlete-of-the-Week on Monday.
McGovern, the school record holder in both the 100 and 200 backstroke, picked up where she left off last season with first-place finishes in those events Saturday, touching the wall in 1:00.80 in the 100 and in 2:15.54 in the 200.
She showcased her versatility at the meet, winning the 200 IM in 2:17.64, which was nearly eight seconds better than Wittenberg's nearest challenger, while teaming with Kaitlyn Fries, Morgan Hughes, and Jillian Saccogna for a photo-finish triumph in the 200 medley relay (1:53.18).
McGovern, who became an NCAC champion (100 butterfly) and qualified for nationals as a freshman last year, along with her fellow Scots, have their sights set on a strong finish this season. They'll look to continue building momentum Saturday when they host Oberlin College in another dual at Timken Natatorium.
