Women Claim Undefeated Dual Season in Mount Union Sweep

The College of Wooster swim teams swept a dual meet with the University of Mount Union on Saturday, and the women capped off its first undefeated dual season since 2004-05.

The women won by a margin of 30, 159-129, and the men won by just a spread of 10, 154-144.

The 200 medley relay team of Kate Murphy, Molly Likins, Leah Jorn and Emma Fikse started the meet off with a winning time of 1:53.32.

Nell Kacmarek kept the lead strong by swimming an 11:11.48 to easily take the 1000 free. Fikse kept Wooster in the win column as she swam a time of 2:03.56 and won by .11 seconds in the 200 free.

Sophomore Hannah Langer then won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.59. First-year Mia Chen came in third with a time of 1:03.10. Next, the freshman Likins won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.56.

Wooster finished one-two in the 200 fly behind Anne Bowers (2:20.63) and Kalla Sturonas (2:28.48).

The string of wins broke in the 50 freestyle. Murphy was the highest-placed Scot at third with a time of 26.42.

Kacmarek and Chen finished second the third in the 100 freestyle, and Murphy and Langer did the same in the 200 backstroke.

Likins won the 200 breaststroke (2:30.62), and Fikse returned to win the 500 free (5:29.03). Bowers claimed first in the 100 fly (1:02.30), and Madison Whitman swam a 2:19.98 for first in the 200 IM.

On the men's side, the 200 medley relay team mirrored a win with a time of 1:39.25 under Josh Gluck, Burke Poeting, Trey Schopen and Ryan Campbell.

Senior Cameron Gelwicks then won the 200 free under a time of 1:44.39. He won the 500 free later with a time of 4:51.57, and he also had a second place finish in the 50 free (22.39).

Schopen won with a five-second difference in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:57.25. He also took the 100 free with a time of 48.86 and the 100 fly in a time of 51.94.

Gluck finished second in three events - the 100 backstroke (55.57), 200 back (2:00.85) and the 200 IM (2:04.25). Poeting was second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.47.

Craig Klumpp and Doak Schultz finished first and second in the 200 backstroke behind times of 2:20.08 and 2:20.17. Schultz also won the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.55.

Freshman Eric Jacques finished atop the diving podium with scores of 177.8 and 211.60 in the 1-meter portion.

Wooster will now prepare for the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships beginning Feb. 13. The four-day event will take place at Denison University.
